Registration is now open for the fathers’ pilgrimage in Debrecen
The Archdiocese of Hajdúdorog announced on Friday that the pilgrimage of the fathers, which has a tradition of several years, will be held between September 26 and 28. Fathers will walk the route from Debrecen to Nyíradony and Máriapócs, starting from the St. Peter and St. Paul Church in Csapókert.
Organized by János Terdik, pastoral vicar, they will set off from the St. Peter and St. Paul Church in Csapókert on Friday morning in September.
Máriapócs is a small town in eastern Hungary, renowned as one of the country’s most significant pilgrimage sites. It is home to the Greek Catholic Basilica of the Weeping Virgin Mary, which attracts thousands of pilgrims each year. The icon of the Virgin Mary housed in the church is famous for reportedly shedding tears in the 17th century, an event that has made Máriapócs a symbol of faith, devotion, and spiritual renewal. The town regularly hosts religious events, liturgies, and pilgrimages.
A special highlight of this year’s pilgrimage is the blessing of a newly erected cross at 10.00 a.m. at the intersection of Sámsoni and Debreceni roads in Debrecen-Martinka, fulfilling a long-held wish of the participants. The journey includes liturgical celebrations, communal meals, and overnight stays at local institutions, with the final thanksgiving liturgy held in Máriapócs on Sunday morning, where families are warmly welcomed.
Participants are encouraged to bring essential pilgrimage gear, and registration is required in advance. The event is organized with the support of the Hajdúdorog Greek Catholic Diocese, led by pastoral vicar János Terdik.
Information about the application can be found on the archdiocese’s website.
