The academic year began with a huge party at the University of Debrecen

The grand opening stadium show, or yoUDay, was held in Debrecen for the ninth time. Even an astronaut picked up a guitar at this year’s yoUDay.

“yoUDay is our day. It only happens once a year, and only a few times in our entire lives, but this evening teaches us about belonging and that there is a community that creates the most important value: knowledge,” Zoltán Szilvássy, the rector of the University of Debrecen, began the greetings.

György Kossa, the chairman of the board of trustees of the Gróf Tisza István Foundation for the University of Debrecen, took over from him. “One body and one soul, this is who we are, together with the university and our beloved city,”  he said.

Kevin Németh, the president of the Student Government, talked about that it was an indescribable feeling to stand on that stage in front of so many people.

“We don’t want to look like anyone, we want to be who we are,” Zoltán Bács, the Chancellor of the University of Debrecen, concluded with this thought, wishing everyone a good time.

This year, the event was organized around the central theme of Debrecenism and Hungarian culture, and in keeping with this, Máté Gudics, the winner of the 2024 Megasztár, kicked off the party with an excerpt from the rock opera “Stephen, the King” (István, a király).

After that, the audience witnessed a real space journey: Tibor Kapu “landed” on the yoUDay stage as well. The astronaut said that although he had been a university student for a long time, he had never seen such a big opening of the academic year. “Whatever happens, you are in the right place today,” he said.

What followed was something we had never seen before on yoUDay or from Tibor Kapu. He grabbed a guitar and sang the hit song of the band Tankcsapda together with Jenifer Szirota.

The hosts of the event also opened with a stylish entrance: they arrived at YoUDay in the latest BMW, of course only in video form. This year, they also treated the first-year university students to something new, as the Freshman of the Year was elected on this evening, who will receive great discounts all year long, for example, to party for free in the Hall.

The stadium show continued with a parade of Debrecen stars: Bogi Nagy and Dánielfy. Then ByeAlex started off strong and created a crazy party atmosphere; the band Abrakazaba also performed, and then we saw the Bagossy Brothers Company as the last guests of the evening, who delighted those in the Nagyerdei Stadium with their iconic songs.

And those who didn’t want to stop partying after the stadium show could continue in the Great Forest Water Tower or the Hall until dawn. And the school year couldn’t start any better than when thousands of people are partying together in the stadium.
