The country’s best organic wines competed in Debrecen

A total of 75 products from 21 wineries, from ten wine regions, were judged by the international jury. The competition decided which drinks would represent Hungary at a prestigious competition in Nuremberg next year. The National Organic Wine Competition was held for the 17th time.

Participants from ten wine regions came to the Debrecen competition, representing both smaller and larger wineries.

“Fine wine starts with good grapes, beautiful and healthy grapes. And we only make good wine with clean technology, so we don’t use wood yeasts or any added substances,” emphasized Anikó Pappné Szita, from Vámosi Pince (Vámosi Cellar), at the event.

The main objective of the competition is to introduce the work of winemakers and to popularize organic wines. According to experts, each bottle of wine is the result of at least a year’s work.

“This year’s competition went very well and brought the best results ever. We have never had five big gold medals in the competition, and it has never happened that thirty-six percent of the wines entered have won gold medals,” highlighted the main organizer, Pál Kovács.

In Debrecen, wine has always been part of the city’s history and culture. According to Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa, wine culture is closely linked to the city’s identity and traditions. “These historical traditions must be nurtured today as well, since Debrecen is still characterized by modernity and the preservation of traditions in both the economy and culture. And the cultivation of wine culture belongs to the same category. In recent years, Debrecen has taken several steps to promote wine culture and preserve traditions,” the deputy mayor explained.

The competition decided which wineries will represent Hungary in the white and red wine categories in 2026 in Nuremberg, at the prestigious MUNDUS VINI competition.
