On the occasion of the Great Forest Day, the Déri Museum in Debrecen is hosting two free guided tours for those interested in nature and local history on Friday, October 10.
The programs focus on the natural values of the Great Forest and the Debrecen museologists who research them, providing an exciting glimpse into the mysterious world of insects and behind the scenes of scientific collecting.
The first walk starts at 10:30 am and is entitled “In the footsteps of the little inhabitants of the Great Forest,” during which prominent entomologists will talk about the insect population of the Great Forest. Led by Chief Museologist Szilveszter Mező, participants can immerse themselves in the permanent exhibition on the first floor of the museum, the “Great Forest—The Treasury of Nature” exhibition. This exhibition presents the natural heritage of the Great Forest of Debrecen, which is close to our home, yet holds many mysteries.
The guided tour places special emphasis on those prominent entomologists and naturalists whose work has contributed to the knowledge and protection of the wildlife of the Great Forest.
The afternoon program begins at 1:00 p.m., during which Chief Museologist Szilveszter Mező will also guide the interested parties through a chamber exhibition, which was created in memory of two biologists and former museum employees: János Ötvös (1911-1991) and Levente Márton Lovas (1944-2022).
The exhibition is located in an unusual location, the Café of the Déri Museum, and presents the life path, collecting passion, and scientific legacy of the two “bug-loving” museologists.
Date: October 10, tours starting at 10. 30 a.m. and 1.00 p.m.
