Storm damage: Debrecen received significant state support
In the ninth phase of this year, 68 municipalities will receive vis maior (force majeure) support for 72 cases, amounting to nearly HUF 1 billion in total, announced Tibor Navracsics, Minister of Public Administration and Regional Development, during the handover of grant support documents. He added that with this round, nearly HUF 3 billion will be allocated for emergency response efforts in 2025.
In his welcoming speech, the minister reminded that since 2011, the government has had the opportunity to provide vis major support to settlements for defense against natural events and for the prevention of damage. The head of the ministry emphasized that they are confident that the rest of the year will be uneventful in terms of natural disasters.
On behalf of Debrecen, Ákos Balázs received the document confirming the allocation of the support. The deputy mayor shares on his Facebook page that this also indicates that Debrecen is of paramount importance to the government.
The city applied for the grant support in connection with storm damage in July. According to the investigations, Debrecen spent HUF 325.5 million on defense and restoration. The rate of non-refundable vis major support that can be requested is 70 percent, so the city requested HUF 227.850 million, for which it provided HUF 97.650 million of its own resources.
Mikepércs was among the beneficiary settlements, and Mayor Zoltán Tímár received a document from the minister on the award of HUF 10 million of support.
As is known, two powerful storms hit Debrecen at the beginning of July, causing significant damage. Many trees fell; in addition to power lines, many tree branches and twigs were torn off, electricity poles also fell, and public street furniture, playground equipment, sidewalks, roads, and municipal and private buildings were also damaged. The storm did not spare Mikepércs either; many trees fell there too, and power lines were torn down.
