Parking lot, stairs, and sidewalk renovation in Újkert
150 parking spaces will be renewed in Újkert in the coming days. Mayor László Papp and local government representatives Dániel Barcza and György Korbeák held a press conference on the spot on October 16, 2025, about the details of the modernization.
As part of the D2030 program, large-scale road renovation works will continue in Debrecen in 2025, as in previous years. The primary goal of these is to replace old and damaged asphalt pavements and, if necessary, to make local structural improvements to the roadway in order to improve the quality and safety of traffic.
Mayor László Papp recalled that the parking system in Debrecen was transformed in the summer, and Újkert was also included in the paid zones, but this does not represent an additional burden for the residents, as two cars per apartment can park free of charge near their residence. He said that the maintenance and renovation of parking lots located in paid zones must be carried out with increased attention; therefore, the regular and cultural development of approximately 150 parking spaces on 2,100 square meters in Újkert will take place in the coming days. He added that the works are expected to last until the beginning of November and HUF 36 million has been allocated for the development. The city manager highlighted that in recent years, 700 parking lots have been renovated in the Tócóskert, Újkert, and Vénkert districts, and in the coming period, works will continue on Apafi Street to ensure comfortable and safe transportation.
Local government representative Dániel Barcza stated that in addition to the modernization of parking lots, the renovation of sidewalks is also taking place in Újkert, and works have already begun on Sétakert Street. He added that sidewalk renovations will also begin soon around Andaházi Street, all of which will contribute to easier accessibility to the vocational secondary school and the shopping center.
Local government representative György Korbeák highlighted that in addition to the parking lots, the stairs in Újkert will also be renovated. As he said, four stairs in the city district will be renovated, and at the request of the public, the sidewalk between Menyhárt Square and the shopping center will also be renewed.
