Georges Bizet’s classic opera, Carmen, returns to the Csokonai Theatre

The audience can experience what it is like when a Mexican milieu moves into the walls of the Debrecen theater.

In the 2024/25 season, another large-scale Carmen production arrived at the Debrecen theater: the persistent work and impressive creativity of the entire company made it possible for an unprecedented opera performance to seduce the audience, directed by Kossuth Award-winning Meritorious Artist Tamás Juronics and with the stunning visuals of Meritorious Artist and Jászai Mari Award-winning set designer László Kentaur Erkel.

The story, moved to the Mexican Day of the Dead milieu, achieved another success with its bold spectacle and the well-known classical musical background, as well as the impressive performances of Viktória Mester and Gabriella Busa in the lead roles.

Now is the opportunity to experience the powerful theatrical experience again, as Carmen is now on the Csokonai National Theatre’s program for four days: the performance will be seen every day from 6.00 p.m. on the Csokonai Theatre stage between October 28 and 31.

As the opera’s director, Tamás Juronics, put it, “A performance has been created that can make young people fall in love with the genre.”

The impressive sets, the detailed costumes, the dazzling makeup, the dance, and the brilliant performances of the opera singers all contribute to making Carmen an unforgettable experience for all ages.
