Community tree planting in Pallag
As part of the “Let’s Plant Another 10,000 Trees in Debrecen!” campaign, in connection with the Future of Debrecen movement, in order to further increase the city’s green spaces, a community tree planting took place in Debrecen-Pallag on Heltai Gáspár Street, in the area next to the parking lot of the Debrecen International School, on November 3, 2025.
The campaign was joined by local residents, members of local associations, students of the Debrecen International School, Balásházy János Technical School, Grammar School and Dormitory of the University of Debrecen, athletes of the DVSC Football Academy, and kindergarteners of the Pallag unit of the Boldogfalva Kindergarten. The event was also attended by Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs, Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa, and Róbert Juráskó, the local government representative of the district.
According to Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa, the economic development of Debrecen and the resulting increase in municipal revenues have brought with them opportunities that have made it possible to finance various programs. These include, for example, the campaign “Let’s Plant 10,000 Trees in Debrecen!” and its continuation, “Let’s Plant Another 10,000 Trees in Debrecen!”. As part of the latter, 24 horse chestnut trees were planted here in Pallag today. As the Deputy Mayor said, with these, a total of about 800 saplings will be planted in the city this fall, and with this, the significant wave of greening that began in 2019 as part of the city’s new green policy can continue. This initiative holds great significance for Pallag as well, where residents deeply value their green surroundings and the forest that embraces their community. That is why it is important to plant more and more trees here, and by doing so we can say that we are already doing something today to green the environment of future generations and make their everyday lives healthier. Lajos Barcsa also considers it important that this tree planting took place within a community framework, as the community of Pallag participated in it—the local residents, the students of the local schools, and the kindergarteners—who are to be thanked for this. This sense of community is also important because those who plant a tree will see it as their own—and will protect, nurture, and care for it as best they can in the years to come.
As Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs said, the municipality is implementing the measures of the Green Codex, which includes the afforestation of the city. The Green Codex, which determines the direction of greening in Debrecen, was prepared with the cooperation of experts from the University of Debrecen and members of the Green Working Group. At the time of compiling the document, the people of Debrecen were also asked for their opinion on what they considered to be the most important measure to be taken in order to protect nature and the environment, and based on the opinions, afforestation was among the five most important things to do. In the opinion of Ákos Balázs, the planted trees significantly contribute to preventing the negative effects of climate change, improve the quality of the city’s air, and provide shade, not to mention that they make our environment more beautiful. The deputy mayor also mentioned that in addition to the urban afforestation program, the afforestation of the surroundings of industrial zones is taking place, protective forests are being planted around both the Northwestern and Southern Economic Zones, and green corridors are being created. In the latter areas—in the Northwest Economic Zone, for example, this fall—tree planting will continue on a scale of thousands. According to Ákos Balázs, it is very important that the citizens of Debrecen are directly involved in the afforestation program. One element of this is the campaign called Adopt a Tree!—aimed at families and communities, within the framework of which 75 trees were planted this year in the spring, the same number will be planted during the fall, and this campaign will continue in 2026. Every element of the Green Codex has a very important role in Debrecen becoming a green city on a European scale.
Róbert Juráskó, the local municipal representative, expressed his delight that the community actively supports, encourages, and warmly welcomes tree-planting initiatives. Trees have already been adopted, and residents have joined forces to ensure that new trees are planted in their streets.
24 trees were planted in Pallag today, but a total of 100 trees will be planted in this constituency during the fall, including at several points in Pallag—for example, on Mezőgazdász Street, on Csáky Imre Street, at the bus stop, and at the football academy. And the residents of Pallag have already indicated that they would like the tree planting to continue in this district next year.
