Debrecen’s vital junction to receive nearly HUF 1 billion in state funding
The Ministry of Construction and Transport will develop the junction of Sámsoni Road and the eastern internal transport corridor.
The government has decided to build the junction of the future eastern internal transport corridor and main road number 471 from state funds. According to the government decision published in the Hungarian Gazette and signed by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, the Ministry of Construction and Transport will be responsible, and the junction will be developed as part of the four-lane expansion of the Debrecen section of road number 471. The government will provide HUF 960 million of support for this in the 2026 budget.
The city had previously transferred the right to use the development plan documentation to the Ministry of Construction and Transport by decision of the Debrecen general assembly.
The aim of the eastern internal transport corridor is to create a direct road connection between the districts in the eastern part of the city, thereby relieving the burden on the access road sections leading to the so-called grand boulevard. The corridor starts from main road 4 and will run to main road 47. The city applied for HUF 6.2 billion of EU funds for the construction of the first section (from the Benedek Mihály Street junction to main road 48), and the decision to support it was made.
As is known, the four-lane section of road no. 471 between kilometer sections 1 and 2.85 (this urban section is already called Sámsoni Road) is currently being developed under the direction of the Ministry of Construction and Transport, to which the route of the eastern internal transport corridor is directly connected.
The construction of the above-mentioned junction, which was ordered by the municipality and is under planning, is inseparable from the ongoing four-lane expansion, since the later construction of the junction would involve the partial dismantling of the currently constructed facilities and the subsequent modification of the traffic engineering facilities and the traffic light system. The Ministry of Construction and Transport undertook the construction of the junction for these reasons.
The eastern internal traffic corridor serves to connect residential areas between main roads
The eastern internal traffic corridor will be an 11.5-kilometer-long, 2×1-lane road on a new route with stormwater drainage and public lighting, six new national road junctions (one of which is a road bridge crossing a national main road and a national public railway line), and another new railway crossing.
• The traffic corridor between main road 4 and main road 47, which primarily involves connecting residential areas between the main roads, is not intended to create a continuous fast relief road—the eastern bypass under preparation on behalf of the Ministry of Construction and Transport serves this purpose—but to improve public transport between the city districts.
• A separate level junction is planned at the main road junction 4, and the plans for the intersection of railway line 105 on the section between main road 48 and Diószegi Road are being prepared as both a separate level and a level crossing solution.
• The junction of main road 47 is being designed by the Ministry of Construction and Transport.
