Hungary’s Top Swimmers Compete in Debrecen

The Short Course Swimming National Championship has begun at the Debrecen Sports Swimming Pool.

After 2023, the city once again became the host of the event. More than three hundred athletes have registered for the competition, which will last until Saturday.

The 21st short course swimming national championship officially began with the ceremonial opening at the Debrecen Sports Swimming Pool. Nearly sixty teams with more than 300 competitors will compete at the event.

The competitors from the Debrecen Sports Schoo0 (DSI) will also jump into the pool during the four-day competition, for whom the domestic environment and the support of the audience are a special motivation.

“It is definitely a great advantage for everyone that we know the pool as people from Debrecen, and fans will come too, since they don’t have to travel to see us. I am excited to see what we will be able to achieve in the domestic pool,” Dominika Varga, swimmer of DSI-Debrecen, said.

The competitions are surrounded by special attention, as a significant part of the Hungarian elite athletes are taking part. It is not by chance that the short course national championship is considered one of the most prestigious events in domestic swimming.

Mayor László Papp pointed out that the Debrecen organizing committee has considerable experience. “We are able to organize many swimming competitions in Debrecen. The national championships have been held here several times, and we have organized numerous world competitions, international sporting events, and European championships in this swimming pool, so we have a lot of experience,” he said.

Moreover, the results of the races not only determine the color of the medals, but can also significantly influence the composition of the Hungarian national team for the European Championships.

“The stakes of this competition are that the coaching committee will meet on the last day and make a proposal for the short course European Championship team based on the current results, so the stakes are very high for everyone here,”  Sándor Wladár, president of the Hungarian Swimming Association, emphasized.

The morning section races start at 9 a.m., while the evening races start at 5 p.m.
