Méliusz Juhász Péter LibraryDebrecen’s Méliusz Juhász Péter Library hosts the opening of the “Tamara Łempicka, the Queen of Art Deco” exhibition on Saturday, November 8, at 4 p.m., celebrating one of the 20th century’s most influential female artists. The exhibition was realized in cooperation with the Polish Institute of Budapest and the Méliusz Library, featuring 20 painting reproductions and accompanied by tableaux recalling the defining stages of the artist’s life.
The exhibition will be opened by museologist Lilla Szoboszlai, with welcoming remarks by István Puskás, Deputy Mayor for Culture, and Jarosław Bajaczyk, Director of the Polish Institute.
Łempicka (1898–1980) fled the Russian Revolution to Paris, where she became an iconic artist of the 1920s and 1930s with her generous, decorative portraits and bold nudes. She consciously built her career, creating a metropolitan allegory of the modern, independent woman. Her paintings can now be found in the world’s most important museums—including the Centre Pompidou—and in private collections; her fans include stars such as Madonna, Jack Nicholson, and Barbra Streisand.
At one point in her life, there was also a Hungarian element: her second husband was the Hungarian baron Raoul Diószeghi Kuffner, with whom they set up their home in New York.
Polish writer, poet, and doctor Grzegorz Musiał will visit Debrecen to present his latest novel, “I, Tamara.”
The book—translated by Zsuzsa Mihályi and recently published by Prae Publishing—focuses on the early stages of Łempicka’s life; the author himself visited key locations in the artist’s life, traveling as far as Mexico and even staying in her former home. The discussion will be moderated by writer Endre Balogh, head of Prae Publishing, and excerpts will be read by Jászai Award-winning actor Klára Varga.
The event is open to all, with free entry.
The exhibition was produced by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tamara de Lempicka Estate.
The exhibition promises not only an inspiring exhibition but also a memorable cultural celebration for all who attend.
