A section of the renovation of Budai Nagy Antal Street has been completed
The junction of the Budai Nagy Antal Street branch has been reopened as of today. Mayor László Papp held a press conference about the renovation in the presence of local government representatives in the area, István Kovács, Viktor Papp, and Edina Szilágyi, on November 7, 2025.
During the site visit, Mayor László Papp said that one of the biggest challenges in the life of the city this year is that major road construction works are taking place in several parts of Debrecen, of which perhaps one of the most complex is the modernization at the intersection of Vámospércsi, Hétvezér, and Budai Nagy Antal Streets. He said that in recent weeks, Budai Nagy Antal Street was closed at the end of Vámospércsi Street precisely so that the works taking place here could progress faster.
“Six kilometers of public utilities must be replaced in the entire development area, which affects the junction, the Faraktár Street section, part of Vámospércsi Street, the service road, and Budai Nagy Antal Street,” explained the city leader. It was stated that during the modernization of the junction, water utility replacement works that are up to 40-50 years old will have to be carried out, along with numerous other public utility replacements.
László Papp noted that the wearing course is not yet on the road surface; it will take place next spring or during the summer, in the final phase. As he said, the works started in May of this year and, according to the contract, will last until September of next year. “It is a great pleasure for us that today the Budai Nagy Antal Street branch can be reopened in the technical condition that I mentioned, still without a wearing course, but it is already usable, and the traffic lights are working. We are progressing at a good pace with all the other investments—the complex renovation of Balmazújvárosi Street–Csigekert Street–Szabó Lőrinc Street–Füredi Street–Szoboszlói Street–Külsővásártér. I hope that by December 15, when the road construction works are underway, we can still make great progress at all junctions,” he underlined. He added that he trusts that by next summer all major junctions will be transformed and renewed, their capacity will be able to increase significantly, and a much safer, higher-capacity transport system can be established in these places.
The mayor recalled that the renovations began in 2016-17, starting in the city center and moving toward the outskirts of Debrecen. He reminded that the one-way streets in the city center and the creation of bus lanes took place around 2016-17, which was followed by the inner junction developments, and now the large junction developments are taking place in the outer parts of the city, on Csigekert-Szabó Lőrinc-Füredi Road, Szoboszlói Road-Külsővásártér, and Vámospércsi Road-Hétvezér-Budai Nagy Antal Street. He noted that he hopes that the reconstruction of Árpád Square-Ótemető Street will start next year, and after that—as has been reported recently—the Sámsoni Road junction, the construction of the inner traffic corridor, and then the construction of the outer large bypass will be on the agenda. He added that the fourth major junction development, which is currently underway, is the connection of Domokos Márton Road and Main Road 354 with a separate level junction, which is also currently progressing well.
Local government representative István Kovács said that there has not been such a large-scale junction development in this area for decades. As he said, they are confident that thanks to the development, they will be able to serve the increased vehicle traffic that has developed in recent decades in the future.
