Debrecen Advent 2025 begins with ice rink at the Great Church
In accordance with the traditions of the Debrecen Advent, the city’s most intimate program series will begin in 2025 with the opening of the ice rink in front of the Great Church.
The long‑awaited opening of the ice rink will take place on November 22 at 9:00 a.m. From the first Advent weekend, the six‑week program continues, offering festive winter fun for all ages.
On November 28, the first festive concert will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Kossuth Square, but at 9:00 a.m. the Fairytale City will open on Dósa Pádor Square, and the courtyard of the Old Town Hall will also open, which will help you tune in to the Christmas holiday under the title “Advent Silence – Light and Music Experience”.
The first Advent candle lighting will begin on Sunday, November 30 at 4:30 p.m. with a traditional procession from the City Hall to the Reformed Great Church of Debrecen.
The most popular Advent program elements will also return: the verklis, the Christmas miniature railway, the Hütte, the Soul Garden, the baroque carousel and the Advent market, but there will also be Christmas trees for kindergarteners and the Advent Cottage will also open its doors. This time, the Debrecen Advent will be enriched with music and dance productions, with Vilmos Gryllus and Orsi Kozma taking the stage, among others.
Santa Claus will arrive in person this year to listen to the children’s Christmas wishes. The Advent Corner, tuned to Christmas, will reopen its doors on Dósa nádor Square from November 28th.
This year, Santa will roll into Debrecen in a carriage and await poems, songs and secret wishes in the fairytale kuckó.
Santa Claus will welcome children in the Advent Corner on December 5 between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., and on December 6 and 7 between 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and then from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
On December 5, from 5.00 p.m. on Kossuth Square, young and old can meet him for the first time during Fruzsina Kovácsovics’ Waiting for Santa Claus show. On December 6, the “Ugly Sweater Run” will be held again this year, and as a novelty, the organizers will present the Ice Flower Carnival on December 13th.
