Autumn tree planting campaign continues in Debrecen

The autumn tree planting campaign continued in the eastern part of Debrecen. In the initiative called “We Are Planting Another Ten Thousand Trees,” residents can also express their desire if they would like to see a sapling in the vicinity of their home. According to the plans, a total of eight hundred trees will be planted in Debrecen this autumn.

Two streets in the eastern part of the city, Nagybánya and Bálint Zoltán Street, were also enriched with new saplings on Wednesday.

A total of seven trees were planted in the fitness park on Nagybánya Street, where plane trees, ornamental pears, and ornamental cherries will provide shade in the summer heat, while a resident of Bálint Zoltán Street asked the city to place a sapling in front of their door, which can grow up to six meters high.

“We have plans for this park; we want to develop it. We want the people living in the housing estate to use this park and be able to do sports, play, and live a community life here,” said István Kovács, a local government representative, on site.

This is the most ideal time, since it is best to plant small trees after the leaves fall but before frost.

A total of 800 saplings will be planted in the city this fall. Debrecen follows a comprehensive environmental protection strategy, which is summarized in the Green Codex, in which residents play a prominent role. The goal is to make it feel like the city is livable in everyday life.

“The city is growing more and more, so it is very important that this scale is also reflected in the tree plantings. And it is important that not only do we have to plant trees, but it is also important that it is done in cooperation with people, and that is why we are especially happy when residents themselves contact us asking for a tree in front of their house or at the end of their garden,” said Deputy Mayor Diána Széles.

In the spring, the city announced the program “Let’s Adopt a Tree!,” and 150 families and communities applied. The program will continue next year.
