Full‑house factory visits at Sensirion on the Night of Modern Factories

The Hungarian Economic Development Agency organized the Night of Modern Factories national program series for the ninth time, which aims to bring interested parties closer to the world of innovation and technology.

This year, 128 factories opened their doors in every county of the country. In Debrecen, the Swiss-based Sensirion Hungary Kft. also joined the initiative. The introductory presentation of the factory visit was given by Ákos Varjas, Head of Process Engineering at Sensirion Hungary Kft., and the next group was guided by György Orbulov, Head of Production at Sensirion Hungary Kft.

In his presentation, Ákos Varjas recalled the history of the Swiss company, whose headquarters are located in the picturesque town of Stäfa. This is where the journey began, which now includes more than one billion manufactured sensors and around 1,200 employees worldwide.

A team of 130 people currently works in production and related engineering in Debrecen.

Those interested could also learn that the Sensirion group invests approximately 20 percent of its annual sales revenue back into research and development, which is an exceptionally high rate in international industrial practice. This commitment explains the company’s continuous innovation and the large number of sensor technology patents. Ákos Varjas pointed out that one of the most important characteristics of innovation at Sensirion Hungary Kft. is miniaturization.

A new sensor type is always born on a relatively large scale, under laboratory conditions, and then, step by step, it shrinks into smaller, more efficient, and energy-saving solutions. Visitors were also able to hold some samples in their hands, so they could see with their own eyes what tiny components lie behind modern medical devices, automotive solutions, or industrial climate technology systems.

The head of process engineering also spoke in detail about the production chain. He explained how the heart of the sensor itself, the silicon-based sensor, is made, then how the various electronic layers are placed on the semiconductor chips, and finally how they reach the Debrecen plant, where final assembly, calibration, and functional testing take place. It was a special experience for the participants in the factory tour that they were able to enter the production area dressed in boots and special protective clothing so they could experience firsthand what a cleanroom environment means in practice.

One of the most important messages of the Modern Factory Night program was that not only technology but also corporate culture is key for Sensirion.

The expert dedicated a separate block to Sensirion’s values, which are built on three basic principles. He said that their everyday lives are woven around three ideas: honesty and integrity, belief in successes achieved together through teamwork, and commitment to high performance.

By the end of the factory visit, it became clear to everyone that behind microscopic sensors there are very human stories, serious engineering work, and an ars poetica that positions Sensirion and with it Debrecen in the Champions League of high-tech companies.

Sensirion Hungary Kft. is a member of the Swiss Sensirion group in Debrecen, which develops and manufactures digital microsensors that help improve the quality of life, increase energy efficiency, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions worldwide. The company works for a greener, more sustainable future with its environmentally conscious technologies, so it is natural that the open house program on the celebration of the factories of the future attracted great interest.
