The development of the Csigekert-Szabó Lőrinc Street junction is expected to be completed by next spring
A press conference was held on the site on December 4, 2025, regarding the capacity-increasing development of the Csigekert Street–Szabó Lőrinc Street junction.
Mayor László Papp stated that the Csigekert Street–Szabó Lőrinc Street junction is one of the most prominent investments in the major injunction developments taking place in Debrecen. He noted that three of the four ongoing transportation developments significantly affect the city’s transportation. He added that this junction has one of the highest traffic volumes, as it is the city’s east-west connection point, and now many people also access the Northwest Economic Zone and the highway through this junction.
“It was absolutely necessary to implement these investments, as the city’s transportation and its volume are increasing to such an extent that these interventions must be implemented,” he underlined. He explained that the developments are taking place simultaneously because the resources are currently available. At the same time, minor delays may occur in the daily work, as utility lines are sometimes found on the construction sites that were not built according to the plans. Nevertheless, the deadline committed to by the contractors can still be met.
It was stated that the junction is currently 60 percent complete. The greatest challenge during the modernization was the full replacement of four large‑dimension drinking water pipes and one sewage pipeline, as the junction is densely interwoven with utilities. The replacements had to be carried out without interrupting the residential water supply. The city leader emphasized that water samples were collected for several months from the newly constructed pipeline in the investment area until they produced negative results, confirming that the water is suitable for human consumption. As a result, the water system has now reached a condition where it can be connected to the city network.
“On the Csigekert Street section, significant utility works are still underway. At present, construction is taking place in the two middle lanes. The contractor aims to avoid any major stoppages in the coming months, despite the winter season, so that progress continues at the proper pace. If the weather permits, work will proceed almost continuously in January and February to return the junction to traffic as soon as possible,” emphasized László Papp.
He added that there is a commitment to local residents: once this junction can be reopened to traffic, the connecting road behind Decathlon leading toward the Liget residential park will be closed, thereby preserving the safe and peaceful traffic system of the Liget Residential Park.
We would like to express our gratitude to the residents, as their cooperation during the construction has truly been exemplary,” began Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa in his briefing.
He explained that in recent times the contractor had to resolve several unforeseen tasks. Among these was the issue that the available utility maps often proved inaccurate. It was then discovered that certain utility lines were not located where the maps indicated, which made continuous modifications to the original plans necessary.
The deputy mayor pointed out that the contractor must handle every challenge in such a way that the works continue smoothly and that utility providers can fully meet their obligations to the residents. “We asked the contractor to complete the junction as soon as possible so that uninterrupted traffic can resume. In the meantime, we request the continued patience and understanding of the residents,” he added.
“We regard this junction as the gateway to our district,” said Erzsébet Katona opening her remarks. The district’s municipal representative explained that in recent times motorists have often experienced difficulties entering the area. According to the plans, however, this will end by next spring. With the completion of the junction’s development, the capacity of the affected road section will increase significantly.
The representative highlighted that the Domokos Márton bypass road and its continuation have already been completed. She added that traffic on Vezér Street has grown considerably in recent times, and she hopes that as a result of the investment, through‑traffic will decrease again. She considers it important that residents can once more live in a calmer, quieter environment.
The representative also noted that several reports have been received about an increase in speeding. For the safety of everyone, she urged drivers to observe the speed limits and the posted traffic signs, concluding her remarks.
