In a month’s time, the holidays will begin and places for summer camps are filling up. Astronomy, chemistry, robotics in a spectacular setting, the exciting world of animals and plants – Agora’s summer camps offer children the chance to explore all aspects of science.

The Science Experience Centre has been organising camps during the summer holidays since 2015. This year, starting on 30 June, they will offer seven weeks of educational activities for children and adults alike.

“Children are engaged in science in a playful, experiential way, without even knowing they are learning – perhaps that’s the secret. Even the simplest seemingly playful activity can give them scientific knowledge,” Agora Science Centre’s professional team leader  Zsófia Hajduk said.

The centre’s experience camps fit in well with the national trend of launching more and more innovative tours for children in summer. According to the Táborfigyelő (Camp Monitor) children’s camp comparison portal, the most popular camps include sports, military and language camps, but there are also a number of courses on robotics, artificial intelligence and game software development.

This year’s weekly tour prices range from HUF 55,000 to 60,000 for day camps, while overnight camps range from HUF 95,000 to 100,000. This represents an increase of 10 to 15 per cent on last year’s prices, due to higher prices for meals, venue hire and entrance fees.

“These costs are increasing at a faster rate than the campers have raised.. They are trying to find a happy medium so they don’t have to provide a service at a loss and parents can afford to provide recreation for their children,” Head of Táborfigyelő Béla Tóth said.

According to Táborfigyelő’s comprehensive analysis, almost 500 weekly camps are already full across the country, but parents still have around 800 tours for their children to choose from. Last year, 215,000 children attended a camp, and demand is expected to be similar this year for the typically week-long summer camps.
