A community flower float is being created for the Debrecen Flower Carnival

Debrecen is preparing for the Flower Carnival with a unique initiative: for the first time, residents of Debrecen will have the opportunity to collaboratively create their own flower float.

The “Community Flower Float” will be more than just a spectacle—it will be a living symbol of love and togetherness, and anyone can take part in its creation. The float, built by the people of Debrecen, will be called “The Power of an Embrace.”

Diána Széles, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, emphasized that this initiative is another example of how “Together, we are Debrecen!” The goal of the community float is to help residents feel an even stronger connection to the Flower Carnival. “This float isn’t being presented by a company, and it’s not about advertising—it’s about the city. It’s about the people of Debrecen taking part in everything from caring for the flowers and decorating the float to participating in the parade. It’s important that locals feel the carnival is organized for them, and I want them to be part of it,” she said, highlighting that the Flower Carnival is the city’s biggest tourist attraction.

Zita Dobos, Managing Director of Főnix Event Organizer Nonprofit Ltd., explained that this initiative reaches back to the city’s first flower float parade in 1905. “120 years ago, when the Debrecen Women’s Association decided they wanted to fund an ambulance for the city, they decorated a cart and paraded it through Debrecen. With unity and love, they stood behind a good cause. When we thought about introducing something new—something with soul and the power to build community—we decided to draw inspiration from that 120-year-old story.”

The decoration of the “Community Flower Float” will take place daily from August 15 to 19, between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM at Dósa nádor Square.

The composition will be decorated with two types of flowers: dried and fresh. Anyone who wishes to participate can already get involved: 240 potted flowers are waiting for loving “adopters.” These flowers can be picked up at the Kölcsey Center until August 3, following a brief registration process. Adopters are responsible for caring for the flowers and returning them to Dósa nádor Square by 3:00 PM on August 19, where they will become part of the community float.
