A new nursery was handover in Debrecen

The Baptist Charity Service Children and Youth Education and Development Centre opened its two-room, 28-place nursery in the northeastern part of Debrecen on June 19, 2025. The project started in July 2022.

At the inauguration, Director Tünde Gál Nagy, whose outstanding achievements in the implementation were emphasised by several people at the event, first greeted the guests. It was announced at the opening that the total cost of the project, which was implemented with 100 percent support, exceeded HUF 415 million. The selection of the construction site for the new nursery was preceded by careful consideration and research. Preliminary surveys showed that the provision of nursery places in the northeastern part of Debrecen is low, so the investment was implemented in the Debrecen-Husztikert district. The necessary equipment for the nursery’s operation has also been purchased, and six employees are currently employed. The children’s familiarisation is continuous, and there is already a waiting list in the institution due to the enormous interest.

In his welcoming speech, Member of Parliament László Tasó stated that in recent years, the Hungarian government has allocated around HUF 200 billion for nursery development. Such institutions are also opening in Debrecen as the demand for them is increasing. He added that the government has done everything possible to encourage young people to have children with the help of the family support system. He emphasised that the system of conditions is vital, and everything is in place for the children to thrive.

Deputy Mayor Dr. Diána Széles said, “As a parent, I know how much trust it takes to entrust your child to others, and in this nursery, the children are clearly in a good and safe place. Debrecen offers 2,000 nursery places, of which more than 1,300 are municipal, and the rest are provided by committed church and private organisations. The nursery developments in Debrecen over recent years demonstrate that cooperation between the municipality and the churches in this area is also effective. The care of the Baptist community is a guarantee that the Tücsökvár Nursery will become a real home for the little ones.”

Dr. Béla Szilágyi, President of the Baptist Charity Service,  spoke about the details of the role that Baptists have undertaken in Debrecen and its surroundings. Part of this is the nursery development, which can ensure that mothers can return to the labour market as soon as possible. “It is a great joy to see the children’s smiles; they also testify that we have built a great institution. It is God’s love that entrusts the children to us. This is both a blessing and a stewardship because our strength lies not in weapons, wealth, or beautiful buildings, but in our sons and daughters,” the President emphasised.

Before the ceremonial ribbon cutting, the President of the Hungarian Baptist Church, János Papp, prayed, asking God’s blessing on the children, parents, and staff, and then thanked God for healthy families and the children to be born.

The interesting aspect of the project is that it aims for the completed nursery to achieve 20 per cent energy savings compared to buildings with almost zero energy requirements. To this end, in addition to the 15 cm facade and ceiling insulation, a 15 kW solar panel system was installed on the roof structure of the building to feed back into the grid. The system ensures the institution’s electricity supply and a heat pump system makes the institution energy-efficient. The two high-performance heat pumps ensure stable operation of the cooling and heating system.
