A new, safer, and more comfortable Határ Road now serves local residents and commuters
The second phase of the large‑scale renovation of Határ Road has now been completed, fully renewing one of Debrecen’s busiest collector roads along its entire length. Thanks to the development, transport conditions for local residents have greatly improved, while the surrounding infrastructure has become significantly safer. At the on‑site press conference, Deputy Mayors Lajos Barcsa and Diána Széles highlighted that the investment not only enhances everyday comfort for residents but also contributes to Debrecen’s continued economic growth.
In the phase just completed, the section between Varjútövis Street and the highway roundabout was renewed over a length of about 1,600 meters. During the construction, new asphalt pavement was laid, local repairs to the road structure were carried out, the sidewalks and drainage ditches were arranged, and six bus stops were modernized. The investment was carried out with gross government support of HUF 200 million. The first phase of the Határ Road renovation was completed in the spring of 2025.
Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa emphasized that the complete resurfacing of Határ Road was finalized today, with the second phase covering a total of 1.6 kilometers. He highlighted that the project went beyond simple asphalting: drainage systems were upgraded, and six bus stops were renovated to provide residents with more comfortable waiting conditions for public transport.
He also noted that since 2019, more than HUF 700 million has been invested in local residential roads in the area, including streets that previously lacked asphalt altogether. He underlined that Debrecen’s continuously strengthening economy makes it possible to carry out further transport developments. Whether financed through tax revenues or government support, the city leadership remains committed to improving residents’ comfort.
“The renovation of Határ Road was also made possible with government funding, for which thanks are due,” he added.
Deputy Mayor and the district’s municipal representative Diána Széles stressed that this development is not only about roads but also about strengthening the local community. She highlighted that Határ Road is one of the district’s most important collector roads. Following the renovation of Kishegyesi Road and Pósa Street, this was the next section residents had long awaited, and it has now been completed with the support of the Hungarian Government.
She emphasized that the true strength of the district lies in its community. Among the most significant achievements of recent years is the establishment of the health center and community house on Pósa Street, which hundreds of people visit daily. These infrastructural developments ensure that no one feels isolated and that everyone can experience the vitality of community life.
She also reflected on the transformation of the area over the past two decades: once a rural, farm‑like environment, it has evolved into a well‑organized, dynamic, and resilient urban district. This progress demonstrates Debrecen’s commitment to balanced development, ensuring that no district is overlooked alongside major investments.
The large‑scale repair of Határ Road also includes painting the road markings, which must be carried out on a dry surface, so the contractor will complete this work in the coming days.
