A whole ring of water could surround Debrecen
Funding for the continuation of the Civaqua programme is guaranteed, and the 2026 budget includes the necessary resources. Thus, thanks to the programme, the permanent water supply of the Vekeri and Fancsikai lakes is also ensured. Ákos Balázs emphasized that it is important that a water ring is created around the city.
The Vezér Road reservoir has become a popular excursion destination, which was developed as part of the Civaqua programme.
Debrecen may be enriched by several such facilities in the future, which could bring the city even closer to the title of European Green Capital. As previously reported the European Commission selected Debrecen as one of the top three candidates in the European Green Capital international competition.
It has now been announced that the 2026 state budget includes the funds for the second phase, thus guaranteeing the necessary coverage for the continuation of the Civaqua programme.
“We will continue to carry the water, since the water arrived at Tócó as the first part of the project, and from there we will continue to carry it to the Great Forest and beyond to the Erdőspuszta lakes, so that the water supply to the Erdőspuszta lakes will be continuously resolved in the long term. Our goal is to create a water ring around the city, since we can develop green areas next to the water ring, “Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs said.
He highlighted that thanks to the project, new recreational areas will also be created for the people of Debrecen, but at the same time, the project contains nature conservation resources, so the most important thing is to carry the water further and create water retention areas. The professional material is being compiled by the Tiszántúli Water Directorate.
“The HTV pumping station, which will practically provide this ecological water replenishment, will have another pump installed there, and water replenishment will start from the second equalization reservoir to the north of Debrecen and then go all the way east to Lake Vekeri,” director of TIVIZIG Krisztián Csűrös informed.
More than HUF 40 billion will be available from KEHOP additional resources for the continuation of the Civaqua programme. Planning could start this year, and the project could be completed by the end of 2029. According to the plans, an 11-hectare eco-park with a three-hectare lake system will be created in Tócóvölgy by then, creating a water ring around Debrecen.
