Advent Preparations Under Way in Debrecen
Advent is just a month away, and preparations for Debrecen’s festive lighting displays are already well under way. Alongside the seasonal lights, a rink on the main square will also welcome visitors to the city centre during the winter festive period, opening on 20 November. The festive lights will be switched on in the city centre only on 21 November, while the rest of the city will light up on the first Sunday of Advent, 29 November.
The courtyard of the Old City Hall will also be included in the Advent decorations as festive lights will illuminate the entire length of Piac Street, from the Small Reformed Church to the Great Reformed Church, as well as the adjoining streets. Other parts of the city will also benefit from the seasonal lighting displays. “This time, the festive decorations will not be limited to the immediate city centre. Csapó Street, Szent Anna Street and Kossuth Street, all the way to the Red Church, will also be adorned with festive lighting. Decorations will also be installed in public spaces in the city’s outer districts,” said Tibor Schwarcz, Deputy Head of the Urban Development Department. The festive lights will be switched on in the city centre on 21 November. In the rest of the city, the strings of lights and illuminated installations will be switched on on the first Sunday of Advent, 29 November, and will remain lit until 6 January.
Construction of Debrecen’s Advent ice rink already is under way in Kossuth Square, where it will welcome skating enthusiasts from 20 November until 10 January. Students from Debrecen will get to use the rink free of charge on weekdays, with registration for this benefit already open for schools.
