Another “cívis” house front is restored, with a nursery home project

According to the plans of the Debrecen Jewish Community, the works could start in the Debrecen Jewish Quarter as early as next year.

On December 10, a contract was signed in Debrecen that will enable the Debrecen Jewish Community to implement a long-cherished plan to establish a retirement home in the Debrecen Jewish Quarter.

The agreement on the property located at 33 Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Street was signed by Mayor László Papp, President Andor Grósz on behalf of MAZSIHISZ, and President Tamás Horovitz on behalf of the Debrecen Jewish Community. László Papp also reported on this on his social media page on Thursday morning.

As set out in the December 10 agreement, the municipality will transfer the ownership of the property to the Debrecen Jewish Community and the Hungarian Federation of Jewish Communities free of charge.

The details were revealed to dehir.hu by Tamás Horovitz, the president of the religious community, on Thursday.

“A modern, comfortable retirement home, meeting today’s standards, will operate on the nearly 1,000‑square‑meter property. It intends to welcome not only members of the religious community but also residents of the city in need of care, depending on available capacity,” he said.

The primary goal is for the elderly to live in an independent living area, and they are envisioning comfortably designed mini-studio-like rooms for this purpose. The number of beds Debrecen’s new nursing home will have and when it is expected to be handed over will be revealed in a later phase of the planning.

The design work is underway, and the development, which will include renovation, demolition, and expansion will begin in 2026. However, the religious community is still seeking additional funding. Under the agreement, the complete renovation of the property must be finished by December 31, 2029.
