The previously closed East Tower was opened on the 27th of September on the occasion of World Tourism Day 2024.
The most effective fire-fighting tools from hundreds of years ago are on display in the latest exhibition at the Reformed Great Church.
The exhibition “Fire with Fire!” commemorates the students who volunteered to fight fires.
At the opening, Pastor András Beszterczey said that this exhibition aims to show how much a community needs selfless service.
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles also stressed the importance of community collaboration at the exhibition’s opening. She said that tourism also allows churches to open up to people. She also said that the city’s tourism is constantly developing, and new hotels have been built, making Debrecen even more attractive to visitors.
“Last year was a solid year, one of our strongest years, with more than 577,000 overnight stays. The data show that we exceeded our expectations by more than 20 percent. That’s a better-than-expected result,” she said.
While 75 percent of tourists were domestic previously, foreign and Hungarian visitors to Debrecen were half last year and half this year. The deputy mayor added that in addition to hotel bookings, visitors also use services, which strengthens Debrecen’s economy.
