Another fully electric waste collection vehicle will now be operating in Debrecen
Another fully electric waste collection vehicle has been handed over to AKSD Kft. in Debrecen, bringing the total number of such trucks in service to three. The 18‑ton vehicle was delivered on Wednesday with the support of the municipality and HUMDA Hungarian Mobility Development Agency as part of efforts to expand sustainable solutions.
Thanks to its electric drivetrain, the new truck will operate with significantly lower noise levels in everyday use. Together with two vehicles introduced in August, three fully electric waste collection trucks are now serving Debrecen and nearby towns.
Sarkadi Tibor, operations control manager at AKSD Kft., highlighted the vehicle’s impressive range: “The factory specification is 250 kilometers, which we have not yet managed to exhaust. On average we cover 40–80 kilometers per day, and the truck usually returns with 50–60 percent charge remaining.”
The project is part of the Ministry of Energy’s Electric Waste Collection Pilot Program, designed to promote the wider adoption of electric refuse trucks through practical experience. It also supports Debrecen’s environmental strategy.
Deputy Mayor Ákos Balázs emphasized that electromobility is a key element of the city’s green future: “Debrecen already operates the two largest electric bus fleets outside Budapest, representing 10 percent of all vehicles. We have also introduced electric vehicles into city operations.”
The handover of the new truck was linked to the 15th Green Fair at the University of Debrecen, where organizations connected to nature conservation and sustainability presented their work.
