Another Reformed institution has become a life-saving point in Debrecen
Thanks to the National Ambulance Service and Nagykonyha Kft., the Kindergarten of the Debrecen Reformed College has become the first public education institution in Debrecen to be equipped with a semi‑automatic defibrillator and the necessary knowledge to respond in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.
On Saturday, the kindergarten received the “Life‑Saving Point” certificate, making it the first public education institution in the city prepared with both the equipment and training required for life‑saving intervention in such emergencies.
Once again, Nagykonyha Kft. donated a semi‑automatic defibrillator, this time to the kindergarten maintained by the Trans‑Tisza Reformed Church District. A similar device was installed in September at the shared Péterfia Street building of the DRK (Debrecen Reformed College) Primary and Secondary School. On this occasion, company representatives Róbert Nagy and Zsolt Vórincsák handed over the device to the kindergarten’s director, Györgyi Feketéné Kavisánszki. All staff members completed the necessary training to operate the device, ensuring that help will be available immediately if needed.
“Our kindergarten has great experience in giving donations,” said Director Györgyi Feketéné Kavisánszki. “In recent years we have helped kindergartens damaged by fire, collected and delivered gifts to children’s homes in Transcarpathia, and supported families affected by war. Now we are in the role of recipients, but in order to continue giving, we must also be ready to save lives.”
The National Ambulance Service has successfully implemented the initiative launched by Director General Gábor Csató in recent years. The concept is that if a company, social organization, or public institution finances the purchase of a semi‑automatic defibrillator, the Ambulance Service will provide free on‑site training for staff. Afterwards, the building is entitled to use the designation “Life‑Saving Point.”
Regional Director Dr. Ferenc Korcsmáros emphasized that the Reformed College Kindergarten is the 24th institution in Debrecen to receive the certificate. This means that hundreds of trained first responders in the city are now able to intervene immediately if necessary.
“Professional experience and data show that in cases of sudden cardiac arrest, survival depends not primarily on the arrival time of the ambulance or hospital care, but on how quickly a bystander begins resuscitation—ideally with the help of such a device. This is community first aid,” said Dr. Korcsmáros.
Representing the Trans‑Tisza Reformed Church District, Bishop Károly Fekete quoted Albert Schweitzer: “It is not enough to let others live; we must help each other to live.” He stressed that protecting life and helping one another can also be realized through such equipment. He highlighted that since the kindergarten is located on Tímár Street, one of Debrecen’s busiest areas, it is especially important that a defibrillator be available outside the building in case of emergency.
The Church District now has three public education institutions designated as Life‑Saving Points: the Péterfia Street Primary and Secondary School, the Tímár Street Kindergarten, and the Kölcsey Ferenc Reformed Practice Primary School. This makes the district one of the most committed maintainers in this field.
The Debrecen Reformed College Kindergarten will soon also appear on the SzívCity mobile app map, providing precise information to nearby users in case of emergency.
