Aquaticum Ready to Launch Anniversary Event Series Celebrating 200 Years of Spa Culture in Debrecen

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of spa culture in Debrecen, Aquaticum Debrecen is launching a 200-day programme series on 1 May, evoking the values of the past while also bringing today’s spa experience closer to visitors.

The organisers are welcoming guests with community programmes and the collection of personal memories, inviting them to celebrate together the tradition and future of spa life in Debrecen.

The two-hundred-year history of Debrecen’s spa culture outlines a unique chapter in the city’s history. The settlement was not built alongside abundant surface waters, nor did it become known as a riverside spa destination; on the contrary, it created its own spa culture out of a lack of water, the recognition of community needs, and a deliberate intention to develop. Thermal water was discovered in Debrecen in 1932, and the city leadership at the time rebuilt the existing bathhouse within two months so that it could accommodate more people.

“Debrecen residents gradually began to discover this opportunity, and it became accessible to large numbers especially when thermal water was discovered near the city and channelled into the baths via a district heating pipeline, after which the facility was completely transformed and a large complex was created,” highlighted local historian József Papp.

The story dates back to 1 May 1826, when the original bathhouse opened alongside the Vigadó building. For this reason, Aquaticum has decided to launch the jubilee programme series on 1 May, lasting for 200 days. “‘What does bathing mean to you?’—under this title, we would like to begin a collection of memories and experiences. This means placing collection boxes at several points across our site, encouraging every guest to share a fond memory or experience related to bathing, which we would like to present together with our own experiences across all our spa units,” emphasised Lajos Fazekas, Managing Director of Aquaticum Debrecen.

Over the past centuries, the leadership of Debrecen has repeatedly recognised that the waters of the Great Forest are not only a natural asset but also a community, health, economic and tourism value. Current developments already place emphasis on sustainability and experience. “We have modernised the medical facilities, where tens of thousands of people regain their freedom of movement each year, and we have created a water-based complex where everyone—from the youngest to the oldest—feels at home. We have not merely built pools, but an ecosystem in the heart of the Great Forest that respects nature while providing the highest level of comfort,” added Mayor László Papp.

To mark the anniversary, a commemorative plaque was also unveiled on the wall of Régi Vigadó. Details of the programme series, which runs until 16 November, are available on Aquaticum’s website.
