At Least Two Direct Daytime Services to Debrecen Required from Town Centres Within 75 Kilometres
A decree by János Lázár, Minister of Construction and Transport, on the detailed rules for timetable planning and unified coordination procedures for national, regional, and suburban public passenger transport services has been published in the Magyar Közlöny (Hungarian Gazette).
According to the decree, public service providers (MÁV and Volán) must prepare the annual timetable to ensure at least a two‑hourly direct daytime connection between Budapest and the cities with county rights, and at least two direct daytime services between Budapest, as well as Debrecen, and any regional town centres within a 75‑kilometre radius.
This means that from every regional town centre within a 75‑kilometre radius of Debrecen, at least two buses or trains must run directly to Debrecen during the day, without transfers. This applies to all nine towns within 75 km in Hajdú‑Bihar County (Balmazújváros, Berettyóújfalu, Derecske, Hajdúböszörmény, Hajdúhadház, Hajdúnánás, Hajdúszoboszló, Nyíradony, and Püspökladány), but several regional town centres in neighbouring counties also fall within the 75‑kilometre radius, such as Nyíregyháza, Tiszafüred, Karcag, and Nyírbátor.
János Lázár spoke about this measure on 16 December, when he signed the agreement on the Debrecen fare community with Mayor László Papp. At the time, he said that the new passenger transport law also stipulates that people within a 75‑kilometre radius must be “fed into” not only Budapest but Debrecen as well.
“We are continuously organising, shaping, and rewriting the regulations in a way that elevates Debrecen alongside Budapest in the field of public transport services—so that this is not just a voluntary commitment, but a mandatory public service justified by increased economic tasks and labour‑market obligations, and supported by state funding and subsidies,” he said.
You can read more about the new fare community here. Under the new system, county and national passes will also be valid on DKV services, while DKV passes will be accepted on MÁV and Volán services within Debrecen.
