Beautiful new arrivals were born at the Debrecen Zoo

Golden-handed tamarins were born in the Debrecen Zoo, and visitors can now see the cubs, the institution announced on its Facebook page.

The zoo received two young female golden-handed tamarins from La Vallée des Singes in France last year in the hope of breeding.

Golden-handed tamarins (Saguinus midas), which belong to the subfamily of marmosets, are native to the northern forests of South America. They live in groups of 4-15 individuals, within which the dominant female has the right to mate with the males.

Their orange-golden hands and feet stand out well from their dark brown or black body fur, from which they received not only their Hungarian name but also their scientific name; the latter refers to King Midas, known from ancient Greek mythology, who turned everything into gold with his touch.

Due to deforestation that threatens its habitat, the species is listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.
