Békás Lake bridge to get new wooden decking soon
The renovation of the Lake Békás pier has begun. The wooden covering of the pedestrian bridge will be replaced in the coming weeks. The local government is financing the renovation of the pier with HUF 80 million, which is planned to be completed within two months.
The Park Forest and the Lake Békás area host numerous outdoor cultural events from spring to autumn. This is one of the city’s most popular community spaces, with many thousands of people visiting every week—both Debrecen residents and visiting tourists. The pier is also used by many people throughout the year, which has left its mark on it over the course of a decade.
The wooden covering of the pedestrian bridge has deteriorated so badly in the damp, humid environment that it is due for complete replacement. During the renovation that has just begun, the structure of the Lake Békás pier will be cleaned, and the pedestrian bridge will be fitted with a much more durable, natural covering than before.
“We will also be working with wood now, so here in the Great Forest area, at Lake Békás, we did not want to use any kind of plastic, but we are working with natural materials, but now we will acquire a special wood, and the bridge will be made of it, a tropical type of wood that will resist moisture, so according to our calculations, the renewed bridge will last for more than ten years,” emphasized Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa.
The local government is allocating HUF 80 million forints for the modernization, during which the surrounding area will also be improved, so that visitors to the Park Forest can cross Békás Lake on a renewed pedestrian bridge by spring.
The renovation is expected to be completed within two months, but the construction schedule is also affected by the weather.
