Capacity expansion begins at one of the busiest junctions in the eastern part of the city begins at one of the busiest junctions in the eastern part of the city

Following Monday, the first phase of the capacity expansion of one of Debrecen’s most important transport intersections, the junction of Hétvezér – Budai Nagy Antal Street, will begin.

The Ministry of Construction and Transport is investing HUF 1.4 billion in the project to make traffic safer and more dynamic.

The project will include the creation of independent right-turn lanes in all directions, complete road construction, pavement reinforcement, and improved cycling and pedestrian facilities. New pedestrian crossing points will be created on Szenci Molnár Albert and Kolónia streets, and a complete track structure replacement and 15 new waiting places will be made on the service road along Vámospércsi Road. The traffic management system at the junction will be renewed, new traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Molnár Albert Szenci and Kolónia Street, and the traffic lights will be aligned up to the Main Road 4. A 261-metre section of the Zsuzsi Forest Railway will also be rebuilt as part of the project.

Leader of the Fidesz-KDNP faction Viktor Papp emphasised that the capacity-expanding development of one of the busiest junctions in the city’s eastern part can begin. With the planned reconstruction, traffic at the intersection of Hétvezér-Budai Nagy Antal-Faraktár-Vámospércsi Road will become safer and more dynamic. The investment is large-scale, as the surface transformation will occur, and the backbone line will also be replaced.

Local municipal representative István Kovács presented the works involved in the junction development. He said the work area was handed over in March, and the contractor has started preparing it for the significant investment. Traffic restrictions can be expected from next week, but the contractor has scheduled the most significant earthworks for the summer break to cause as little disruption as possible.

Local municipal representative Edina Szilágyi expressed joy that the development wave has also reached the city’s eastern part. She emphasised that the people living here also deserve to have their living conditions improved. Like those who spoke before him, she also asked for patience and understanding from the residents and those who travel here. She said that this year will not be easy because of the construction work, but at the same time, it will be good to see when the long-awaited renovation is completed.

During the construction period, the works will be carried out with the continuous maintenance of two-way traffic, but local, minor disruptions in space and time are expected. The utility excavation works will be done with local diversion and occasional signal traffic control.

The contractor has prepared traffic restriction plans for the first period until the start of school in September. In the first phase, from the second half of May 2025 to mid-June 2025, it is expected that the demolition of the central islands, utility replacement works, and the relocation of the school fence will take place on Main Road 48 while maintaining two-way traffic. The outer lane in the section in front of the school and kindergarten on Faraktár Street will be closed toward Vámospércs.

During construction, the traffic light at the junction of Faraktár Street and Kolónia Street will be turned off and will operate in “yellow flashing” mode. Pedestrian crossing will be ensured, but increased attention must be paid to driving. Road construction and utility construction will also occur on the service road parallel to Vámospércsi Street.

In July 2025, due to the replacement of utilities, the outer lane will be restricted on both sides of the Faraktár Street section of Main Road 48 for road construction and utility works. Traffic will be secured on 2×2 lanes from the junction of Hétvezér —Budai Nagy Antal Street towards Vámospércs. The traffic light at the Faraktár Street—Kolónia Street junction will continue to operate in “yellow flashing” mode. A site visit will identify the temporary locations of the existing bus stops on the section.

In August 2025, vehicles will be allowed to travel on one traffic lane in both directions on the section of main road No. 48 between Kolónia Street and Létai Street, and Budai Nagy Antal Street may also be closed for a short period at the junction up to Ruyter Street. The Zsuzsi Railway will be rebuilt during this period, and further utility replacement works are expected.

In August 2025, the section of Main Road 48 between Kolónia Street and Létai Road will be open to traffic in 1 -1 lane in both directions. Budai Nagy Antal Street may also be closed at the junction with Ruyter Street for a short period. The Zsuzsi railway will be reconstructed during this period, and additional utility replacement works are expected.

The project is an investment of the Ministry of Construction and Transport and is being carried out by Colas Út Construction Ltd.

The contract entered into force on March 12, 2025. The development’s implementation time is 18 months. Construction is expected to be completed by September 12, 2026.
