Children’s Day Events in and Around Debrecen

Events for children and families will take place across numerous locations throughout the city over several days, offering cultural, scientific, community, theatrical, and outdoor experiences.

Friday, 29 May

2.30 p.m. – 5.30 p.m.: Children’s Craft Workshop
Venue: Children’s Section, MÉLIUSZ Central Library
Children are invited to take part in a “Magic Cloud and Wonderful Snail Family” craft session, alongside a book recommendation corner.

3.00p.m. – 7:00 p.m.:  Újkert Children’s Day
Venue: DEMKI Újkert Community Centre – Újkert sledging hill, next to the Maltese playground
The Újkert sledging hill and its surroundings will be transformed into a fairy-tale world where play, movement, music and creativity take centre stage. Families can enjoy a festive fair atmosphere, handmade crafts, chimney cake, honey specialities and the “Family & City – Through Children’s Eyes” street art exhibition, where visitors may vote for their favourite artworks. Closing event of the “Strength in Community” project.

7:00 p.m. – Pongrác Kacsóh: János the Knight – musical
Venue: Csokonai Theater


From May 29 to 31, the Night of Literature will also welcome visitors at eight downtown venues, organized by the German Cultural Forum of Debrecen.

From May 29–31, Debrecen Drive will also welcome families to the Nagyerdő.

Saturday, 30 May

9.00 a.m.: Nagymacs Children’s Day Football Cup
Venue: Steinfeld Mansion, asphalt mini football pitch

10.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m.: Nagymacs Family and Children’s Day
Venue: DEMKI Nagymacs Community Centre
Visitors can enjoy musical and dance stage performances, children’s activities, a creative playhouse, outdoor games, a bouncy castle, face painting and glitter tattoos. The programme will also feature a tractor showcase, motorbike rides and a miniature train.

From 10.30 a.m.: Children’s Day at the Amusement Park
Venue: Zoo Debrecen, Amusement Park
10.30 a.m.: Assistance dog demonstration
11.30 a.m.: Two-Sword Samurai demonstration
1.30 p.m. – 3.30 p.m.: Giant bubble show
2.30 p.m.:  Performance by Vili the Magician
3.00 p.m.: Military band – film soundtrack favourites
3.30 p.m.: Garagulya Stilt Walkers – fairground comedy performance

Ongoing programmes: Zoo Corner – fascinating facts about the animal kingdom, relics, courage tests and activity sheets; Games Tent featuring the Natural History Collection’s games; creative workshop with face painting, glitter tattoos and craft activities; Interactive workshop by the Hajdú-Bihar County Archives of the Hungarian National Archives, Craftsmen’s Street, Book press, Postcard-making and Giant puzzles; Blue Cross games; airsoft shooting; Vili the Magician; Fényfelé Foundation; Debi Corner – activities for babies and toddlers. During the event, a sugar cannon will also be fired, with exact times announced by the presenter.

11.00 a.m. – 5.15 p.m.: Children’s Day Weekend at Agora
Venue: Agora Science Centre
11.00 a.m. –11.15 a.m.: Cosmix – planetarium screening
12.00 p.m. –12.30 p.m.: Balloon Fun Extra – experimental demonstration / Cosmix – planetarium screening in English
1.00 p.m. – 1.30 p.m.: Animal Engineers – educational lecture
2.00 p.m. –  2.15 p.m.: Cosmix – planetarium screening
3.00 p.m. – 3.30 p.m.: Balloon Fun Extra / Cosmix in English
4.00 p.m. – 4.30 p.m.: Schaeffler Robotics: In the Footsteps of Machines
5.00 p.m. – 5.15 p.m.:  Cosmix – planetarium screening
Visitors can also explore the Light Island and the Robot Base throughout the day.

2.00 p.m. – 8.00 p.m.: Józsa Children’s Day
Venue: DEMKI Józsa Community Centre – green area behind Józsa Park, on the banks of the Tócó Stream
The event will feature contributions from local public institutions and civil organisations, the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative, and Curious Katica and Her Band. Accompanying activities include glitter tattoos, hair braiding, face painting, a bouncy castle, balloon clown, Natural History Collection activities, giant bubbles, laser sport shooting, selfie gate, petting zoo, bird demonstration, treasure hunt, wheel of fortune, dog show, health screening bus, table tennis tournament and craft workshops.

3.00 p.m. – 5.00 p.m.: Lurkó Grove – Children’s Day Programme at the Youth House
Venue: DEMKI Youth House
The afternoon begins at 15.00 with a musical session by Lilla Lövei Nagyné, followed at 15.30 by Pepe Manó’s children’s concert. Alongside the stage programmes, children can enjoy face painting, craft activities, a bouncy castle, games, popcorn and candy floss.

3.00 p.m. – 6.00 p.m.: Ondód Children’s Day
Venue: DEMKI Ondód Community Centre
Families are invited to enjoy a bouncy castle, balloon clown, traditional wooden skill games, face painting and a craft table.

7:00 p.m. – Pongrác Kacsóh: János the Knight – musical
Venue: Csokonai Theater

9.00 a.m. – 7.00 p.m.: Debrecen Drive
Venue: Great Forest Stadium

Between 30 and 31 May, a Children’s Day Jungle Tram will operate throughout the day as part of a collaboration between the Csokonai National Theatre and DKV.

Sunday, 31 May

10.00 a.m. – 11.30 a.m.: Children’s Day Scribble Workshop: The Invisible Pillar Guard
Venue: MODEM

From 10.40 a.m.: Children’s Day at the Amusement Park
Venue: Zoo Debrecen, Amusement Park
10.40 a.m. – 11.30 a.m.: Performance by Clown Gyuri
1.00 p.m. – 5.00 p.m.: Move to the Rhythm! – dance group showcase
2.00 p.m.:  Trial biking demonstration
2.30 p.m.: Falconry demonstration
3.00 p.m.: Performance by the Vojtina Puppet Theatre
Special guest: Spider-Man
Ongoing programmes: Zoo Corner, Games Tent, interactive archival workshop, Craftsmen’s Street, Blue Cross games, Vili the Magician, Fényfelé Foundation, Deby Corner – activities for babies and toddlers, Helen Doron Language School, Wonder Bicycles – Bicycle Museum. A sugar cannon will also be fired during the event.

11.00 a.m. – 5.15 p.m.:  Children’s Day Weekend at Agora
11.00 a.m. – 11.15 a.m.: Cosmix – planetarium screening
12.00 p.m. – 12.30 p.m.: Balloon Fun Extra – experimental demonstration / Cosmix – planetarium screening in English
1.00 p.m. – 1.45 p.m.: Amazing Animal Children – educational lecture
2.00 p.m. – 2.15 p.m.: Cosmix – planetarium screening
3.00 p.m. – 3.30 p.m.: Balloon Fun Extra / Cosmix in English
4.00 p.m. – 4.30 p.m.: Schaeffler Robotics: In the Footsteps of Machines
5.00 p.m. – 5.15p.m.:  Cosmix – planetarium screening
Light Island and the Robot Base will be open throughout the day.

The Vojtina Puppet Theater invites children and adults alike to enjoy the performances of the first VONAL Festival. On Children’s Day, Sunday, the program features a guest performance titled “The Adventures of Kispipi and Kisréce.” Vojtina’s performances will also be featured at the Children’s Day events at Debrecen Drive and the Amusement Park.

2.00 p.m. – 6.00 p.m.:  Dance-themed Children’s Day in the Great Forest
Venue: Great Forest Open-Air Stage

9.00 a.m. –  6.00 p.m.: Debrecen Drive
Venue: Great Forest Stadium

Related Events

  • In May, the MÉLIUSZ Benedek Elek Library will feature a selection of books and a mini-exhibition in celebration of Children’s Day.
  • During the Children’s Day weekend, the Kölcsey Center will host the ZSart exhibition alongside the Spring Exhibition, while the Apollo Cinema will screen family-friendly films.
  • June 5 (Friday) 2:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m. – Vénkerti Juniális and Family Afternoon at the DEMKI Borsos Villa Community Center, featuring music and dance performances, children’s programs, a creative playhouse, outdoor games, a bouncy castle, face painting, glitter tattoos, and a craft market.
  • June 6 (Saturday) 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. – Homokkert Juniális at the DEMKI Homokkert Community Center.
  • June 6 (Saturday) 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. – A Journey Through the Realm of Fairy Tales – a children’s and family day at Liget Square, organized by the DEMKI Csapókerti Community Center. Activities for children include a fairy tale concert and giant puppets, an extreme cycling demonstration, a bubble show, an escape bus, and free accompanying programs.
  • June 20 (Saturday) – Children’s Day combined with Kismacsi Júniális at the DEMKI Kismacsi Community Center.
