Community Float Decoration Now a Tradition During Debrecen Debrecen Flower Carnival
One of last year’s new features at the Debrecen Flower Carnival was the community flower float, entitled The Power of an Embrace. The idea for the composition was inspired by a local initiative from 120 years ago, when a women’s association decorated a cart to raise money to purchase an ambulance.
After the initiative proved a great success with the people of Debrecen, the organisers decided to launch the community effort again. The community flower float will therefore be more than just a visual spectacle: it will be a living symbol of love and togetherness, and anyone can take part in creating it. This year, 150 potted plants are looking for adopters. Participants willing to take part can take the plants home, care for them for a few days, and then return them to Dósa nádor Square on 18 or 19 August, where the plants will be used together to create the decoration for the community flower float.
The initiative is also closely connected to the message of this year’s Debrecen Flower Carnival: ‘What we have received, we pass on.’ A flower begins its journey within the community, is cared for by an adopter for six days, and then returns to the community, where it will take on a new form as part of a collective creation on 18 August.
At the announcement event, members of the public who wanted to take part were given a potted plant by members of Debrecen-based groups performing at the Debrecen Flower Carnival. The young dancers from Feeling, LESZ Dance and Valcer also took to the stage, of course, giving the audience a taste of what they will be able to see from them at the carnival. And, naturally, the parents were busy working behind the scenes, whose tireless efforts are essential to making any performance possible.
The lively programme of music and dance was also the opening event of this year’s The City Dances programme series. And this is only the beginning…
