County Chamber of Commerce and Industry Holds Conference on Hidden Talent Within Workforce
A conference on recognising and developing talent within the workforce was held at the headquarters of the Hajdú-Bihar County Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Participants discussed how workplaces can be adapted to meet the needs of people who process information differently or are more sensitive than average. According to the speakers, corporate practices that take employees’ individual abilities and needs into account can also strengthen a company’s competitiveness.
At the conference titled “Hidden Talent within the Organisation,” held at the county Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s headquarters, participants explored how businesses can create environments in which employees with different ways of functioning can also fulfil their potential.
We pay attention, learn, work and solve problems in different ways: the natural diversity of how the human nervous system functions is known as neurodiversity. For neurodivergent people like including autistic employees and those with ADHD, certain aspects of a conventional workplace can present challenges. A noisy office or a traditional job interview, for example, can make it more difficult for them to demonstrate their abilities. At the same time, work organisation that takes individual needs into account can help turn their knowledge and talent into an asset for businesses.
“They notice connections that others may overlook, can focus on a problem with remarkable intensity, or come up with creative solutions that can represent significant value for a business. Neurodiversity and neuroinclusion are therefore not only social or equal-opportunity issues; they are business issues as well,” emphasised Éva Skultéti, Secretary-General of the Hajdú-Bihar County Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The cooperation of employees from different cultural backgrounds was also discussed as people from 55 nations are already working together at BMW’s Debrecen plant. “The first thing I had to learn, and something I always try to pass on, is that the plant is not simply a technical facility, but a community of people. We need to think in terms of people with different abilities and personalities, and we have to find the place where each person can perform at their best,” said Hans Peter Kemser, President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing Hungary Kft.
The conference also examined opportunities for business development. Zsuzsanna Lukács, Deputy State Secretary at the Ministry for National Economy, spoke about the support available under the Ábrahám Ganz Economic Development Programme. A range of measures is available to support companies’ development, from launching a business and entering foreign markets to managing generational succession. “They include programmes, some of which are already familiar to businesses operating in the market, while others are being made available to entrepreneurs again through a potentially new approach and fresh perspective,” Zsuzsanna Lukács said.
In cooperation with the Hungarian Economic Development Agency, the county Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised the conference for the second time, focusing on the opportunities within workplace communities and encouraging the exchange of experience between businesses and professionals.
