The history of theatre in Debrecen has reached a milestone anniversary: 160 years ago, on 7 October 1865, the Csokonai Theatre building on Kossuth Street was opened. On Wednesday, the company announced its jubilee season to commemorate the anniversary.
For the 2025/26 year, audiences can expect 17 new shows and 10 remaining shows, with season ticket sales starting on 7 May 2025.
“The repertoire includes opera, operetta, comedy, classical and modern drama, musicals and family shows. This fully reflects our vision, our mission to be a real, well-established, great people’s theatre of all styles,” Theatre dDirector Szabolcs Mátyássy said.
For the 8th MagdaFest they are preparing a special performance, for which they have chosen an alternative venue: they will perform Magda Szabó’s play “The Beautiful, Bright Day” in the Csokonai Theatre under the revolving stage of the Big Stage.
In addition, as in this season too, they are also preparing guest performances. They maintain their traditional cultural relations with Szatmárnémeti and Oradea. The first performance of the new season will be Ferenc Molnár’s comedy “The Glass Shoe” on September 26, but the programme will also include: “Fiddler on the Roof”, “The Jungle Book”, “The Crucible” and Zoltán Egressy’s most-played drama, “The Portuguese”.
The Csokonai National Theatre is launching 22 season tickets for the 2025/26 jubilee season, including 5 youth, 4 high school, and 3 university tickets, the redemption of which will begin on August 4. Their additional 10 adult season tickets include pensioners, opera, and several studio season tickets.
As stated in the theatre’s announcement, the advance booking applies to adult season tickets and is available to anyone. The advance booking period is between May 7 – July 31, and the venue is the Csokonai Theatre. Those who buy their season tickets during this period will receive a free studio performance of their choice as a gift, which they can redeem during the season. Season tickets are now available at the box office and on the website. The performances can be browsed here.
Most of the performances are performed with English subtitles, and they will continue their thematic and traditional theatre tours in the anniversary season, as well as participating in major cultural events in the city.
