Daefi’s school dental clinic on Jerikó Street has been completely renovated
The Debrecen Primary Care and Health Development Institute (Daefi) has opened a new dental treatment unit at the Jerikó Street location of the Daefi Dental Primary Care and Emergency Service. This is in the school dentistry of the Beregszászi Technical School, where the second dental office was completely renovated last spring after development.
At the press conference held on May 19, 2025, to present the investment, Director of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre’s Beregszászi Pál Technical School and Dormitory Katalin Nagyné Oláh greeted the participants, especially the students of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre’s Construction Technology and Technical Vocational School (also called Építech) who participated in the renovation of the office. She expressed joy that the school can accommodate such a very important, collaboratively created facility serving health preservation.
According to the Chancellor of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre, Zsolt Tirpák, the social responsibility programme, linked to vocational training, is a prominent feature of the strategic principles of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre.
The dental office’s reconstruction, development, and renovation fall within the scope of social responsibility as a very important community goal and task. The students of the Construction Technology Vocational Training School have renovated a dental office for the second time within the framework of their internship, under the guidance of their instructors. This is a creative process, as it is not a matter of practical work built and dismantled in a workshop environment but of creating a value that serves the good and health of the community and their fellow students, which is permanent.
According to Zsolt Tirpák, this is very important in Debrecen since the city’s most important values are cooperation, care, and mutual support. The chancellor thanked the city leadership, the University of Debrecen, Daefi, and the schools and their students for working together in these programmes and making the knowledge represented by the DSZC useful.
Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasised the importance of the cooperation typical of Debrecen. According to her, this distinguishes our city from other settlements, since everyone here thinks and acts together for common goals. This collaboration is particularly valuable, as it was done for the benefit of the children of Debrecen. In this collaboration, students also participated for the health of their peers, for which they deserve our thanks. Behind this specific clinic renovation is also a larger cooperation, which includes the city government, the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre, and the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen through the Debrecen Primary Care and Health Development Institute (Deafi).
Daefi carries out school health screenings for 42 thousand children, including dental screenings in 28 school dental districts, twice a year. In the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre’s Beregszászi Pál Technical School and Dormitory, 3 out of 28 school dental districts, which means 6,600 children, are served in two clinics. The complex renovation of one of the two clinics was completed in 2024, and the other is now.
She mentioned the free orthodontic treatment provided to thousands of children as a unique feature of Debrecen’s school dental care nationwide. Another unique solution is that instead of the previous two locations, as a result of the cooperation of various school maintainers, the local government, and Daefi, many schools now have school dental clinics on site, which greatly facilitates the dental screening and treatment of children, which is also a huge help for parents and families. Thanks to the regular screening tests, the teeth of Debrecen’s children have become much healthier. In this regard, the deputy mayor emphasised that in Debrecen, it is not just a matter of saying that this city is a caring city, but a fact resulting from cooperation. She said, “The fact that practical results can be achieved in Debrecen through cooperation is our shared pride.”
Director of the Debrecen Primary Care and Health Development Institute (Daefi) Csaba Papp spoke about the importance of the collaboration and thanked the University of Debrecen and, within it, the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen, as well as all the staff working in this area, for ensuring primary health care in the city.
He also highlighted that Daefi dentists perform dental on-call duties as an additional task. Csaba Papp also thanked the school maintainers, including the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre, for providing space for school dental clinics in their institutions and helping establish them with financial support and work.
Csaba Papp stated that the renovation of the recently opened dental office in the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre’s Beregszászi Pál Technical School and Dormitory cost more than HUF 3 million, which the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre financed. The purchase of a new dental treatment unit worth HUF 10 million was made possible by the local government, and Daefi provided the office’s equipment at a value of half a million. The total cost of operating the two dental offices in the institution is HUF 6 million per month, which is financed by the state.
The Debrecen Vocational Training Centre recognised the work of the students and teachers of the Construction Technology and Technical Vocational School in renovating the dental office with gift packages.
