Debrecen and EDC Debrecen Nonprofit Kft. once again honored with Bicycle‑Friendly title

The Bicycle‑Friendly Municipality and Bicycle‑Friendly Workplace awards were presented on Wednesday in Budapest; ten municipalities and ten companies or public institutions received the title.

Kornél Kovács, head of department at the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM), stated that the ministry and its predecessors have announced the Bicycle‑Friendly Municipality and Bicycle‑Friendly Workplace competition for the 17th time. The aim is to encourage more people in Hungary to use bicycles for everyday transport.

He emphasized that raising transport awareness and promoting a cycling mindset has been a priority for years. Programs such as “Cyclists’ Breakfast” and “Mobility Week” serve this purpose.

He also pointed out that since 2010, Hungary has invested around HUF 250 billion from domestic and EU sources in developing the cycling network, resulting in more than 2,200 kilometers of new cycle paths. With the implementation of existing plans, the country could soon have 6,000 kilometers of dedicated cycle routes.

According to the Hungarian Institute for Transport Science and Logistics (KTI), which organizes the competition, the ministry launched the program in 2006. For the 2025 competition, 38 entries were received—17 municipalities and 21 workplaces applied for the “Bicycle‑Friendly” award.

Municipalities awarded the Bicycle‑Friendly title: Kispáli, Lenti, Tamási, Szarvas, Veszprém, Debrecen, Vásárosnamény, and Budapest’s 3rd, 10th, and 13th districts.

Workplaces awarded the Bicycle‑Friendly title: EDC Debrecen Nonprofit Kft., Arcanum Hotel Békéscsaba, Közszolgáltató Nonprofit Zrt. (Public Service Non-Profit Ltd.) in District XIII of the capital, BKK Budapesti Közlekedési Központ Zrt. (Budapest Transport Centre Ltd.), BP 18 Egyesített Óvoda Pestszentimrei Zöld Liget Tagóvoda (BP 18 United Kindergarten Pestszentimrei Zöld Liget Branch) and BP 18 Egyesített Óvoda Pestszentlőrinci Vadvirág Tagóvoda (BP 18 United Kindergarten Pestszentlőrinci Vadvirág Branch), the Local Government of Kőbánya in Budapest’s 10th district, the Mayor’s Office, the University of Sopron, and the University of Pécs.

At the ceremony, it was announced that winners can use the Bicycle‑Friendly title, logo, and plaque in their communications for one year.
