Debrecen and its region emerged as one of the winners of the long weekend

During the four-day break in October, tourists spent a total of 611 thousand guest nights in our country, according to data from the National Tourism Data Service Center (NTAK). Hungarians in particular were particularly keen to travel, with more than 61% of guest nights coming from Hungarian guests. The winners of the long weekend were primarily rural service providers, as they generated 64% of the total accommodation revenue—HUF 9.4 billion, Visit Hungary Zrt. announced.

Between October 22 and 25, a record number of 317 thousand guests stayed in Hungarian accommodations, which registered around 611 thousand guest nights.

The pleasant weather especially encouraged our compatriots to travel. Of these, 184 thousand people set off and spent 375 thousand nights in domestic accommodation. Interest in destinations outside the capital city surged, as evidenced by the 42 percent increase in rural accommodation revenues.

Domestic travelers were mainly attracted by rural destinations, which were resplendent in their full autumnal colors. After Lake Balaton, the most popular rural destinations were the Mátra-Bükk, the Budapest area, Debrecen and its region, and the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza regions, with Hajdúszoboszló, Hévíz and Eger taking the top spot among settlements.

The majority of foreign tourists vacationed in the capital, where they arrived in the largest number from the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, and Israel. Most people arrived in the countryside from the Czech Republic, Germany, Romania, Austria, and Slovakia. They primarily sought out Lake Balaton, Bük-Sárvár, and Győr-Pannonhalma, and among the settlements, they most preferred our spa towns, Hévíz, Bük, and Sárvár. The majority of guests (56%) stayed in hotels. Among hotels, four-star hotels proved to be the most popular, with 59% of guests choosing this type of accommodation. Private and other accommodations also had significant traffic, with 31% of guests booking accommodation here.

Thanks to the outstanding tourist traffic from the countryside, the festive long weekend also brought a revenue record: it enriched accommodation facilities nationwide by HUF 14.8 billion.
