Debrecen Commemorates Martyrs of Arad
The Municipality of Debrecen held a memorial ceremony and wreath-laying ceremonies on 6 October 2026 to mark the day of remembrance for the heroes of the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence and the generals executed in Arad on 6 October 1849.
The ceremony began in Kossuth Square with the raising of the Hungarian flag and its lowering to half-mast, before continuing at the Dying Lion Monument in the Military Cemetery, where Deputy Mayor István Puskás delivered a speech. “In today’s digital world, is it possible to capture in a photograph or a post everything that needs to happen within a person when they symbolically bow their head before a memorial? Today, as we stand before the martyrs of the 1848–49 Revolution and War of Independence, how can we show that this bowing of the head contains respect, the enduring grief we feel over the loss, and our thanks and gratitude to those martyrs to whom, even more than 170 years later, we owe the fact that we can live in a free and independent Hungary?” As he said, when we pause for a few seconds before the memorial, all these thoughts are present in the gesture of bowing our heads.
The city leader also drew attention to a parallel reaching back to ancient Rome. According to legend, Rome has so-called “talking” statues that convey messages to people. “We can imagine this lion now as one such talking statue, speaking to us, sending us a message and telling us a story. The question is whether we hear the words of this stone lion, whether we hear its messages and its stories. Can it tell us the stories of the Arad martyrs, each and every one of them? Each of their stories is a novel in its own right, a separate instructive parable about standing firm, standing up for one’s principles and accepting the greatest sacrifice. It can tell the story of a nation that, even after a lost war of independence, survived, remained on its feet and did not give up the struggle,” he said. Addressing those attending the memorial ceremony, István Puskás said that those who come before this stone memorial should hear this story, hear what this statue is telling us, and take it with them and share it with others.
The commemoration continued with a wreath-laying at the stone cairn commemorating Honvéd General József Nagysándor and concluded with a wreath-laying at the József Nagysándor memorial plaque on the wall of Recruitment Office No. 2 (58/A Péterfia Street).
