Debrecen Design Week has begun

The aim of the event related to Budapest Design Week is to ensure that everyone, regardless of age and gender – even professional background—can find inspiring events throughout the country.

Budapest Design Week has been the most important event in the Hungarian creative industry for 22 years, where the values, innovations, and creators of design are put in the spotlight every autumn.

The 2025 program series, with the motto “Fluid Boundaries,” reflects on the blurring boundaries of the design industry and awaits interested parties with more than 175 programs in 10 cities between October 8 and 19.

The aim of the event is to ensure that everyone, regardless of age and gender—even professional backgrounds—can find inspiring events throughout the country. The general public can discover how design shapes everyday life through colorful programs, walks, guided tours, and creative workshops—whether it concerns objects, interiors, or urban spaces.

One of the novelties of the national festival this year is that Debrecen is also joining the lively series of events and, as the creative center of the eastern region, is inviting those interested in design with an independent, diverse program.

Debrecen Design Week will take place between October 8 and 18 in cooperation with the city’s cultural actors—the Art Center of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Debrecen, Károly Kós Secondary School of Arts, Technical School and Dormitory, the Malter Film Festival, and the MODEM Modern and Contemporary Art Center.

The program series will start on October 8 with an open workshop at the Kós Károly Art Secondary School of Arts, Technical School, and Dormitory, where interested parties can tour the workshops of the fashion, graphics, motion picture animation, and goldsmithing departments, taking a look at the students’ creative work.

The Malter Film Festival will take place at the Apollo Cinema between October 9 and 11, where exciting short films, Debrecen and international works, as well as the best of the 2025 competition program, will be screened. On October 11, the creative programs of the „Elmosódó határok” ( “Fluid Boundaries”) workshop series—T-shirt painting, animation production, and character design—will offer direct workshop experience.

On October 15, an interactive workshop led by Dóra Balogh (WEALL) and the Art Center of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Debrecen, “The invisible made visible in the fashion and textile industry,” will bring the participants closer to the living situation of child laborers in the fashion and textile industry through a sensitizing role-play, highlighting the injustices of the global supply chain and the issue of consumer responsibility.

On October 17, the Art Center of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Debrecen, the University and National Library of the University of Debrecen, and BIKSZ will jointly present the interdisciplinary volume titled “Mi a (m)érték?! “(What is (m)value?!), the topics of which will be presented by Zsigmond Lakó and Kata Anna Váró.

On October 18, MODEM will host the roundtable discussion “Which year are you?—generational questions in the field of design,” moderated by Kata Anna Váró, where Éva Kopócs, Katka Kiss, Erzsó Harcsa, Kristóf Mándli, and Bence Csalár will discuss generational differences related to design, use of raw materials, and changing perspectives.

The program series will conclude with the guided tour “Fashion and Generations” at the exhibition “Which year are you?”, held by fashion expert and fashion journalist Bence Csalár.

The national press conference of Budapest Design Week was held on October 8 at 10 a.m. at the 360 Design Budapest exhibition venue, in the Buda Castle District. Kata Vizi, CEO of MODEM and main organizer of Debrecen Design Week, also spoke at the event, presenting how Debrecen is increasingly connected to the ever-expanding network of the Hungarian design scene and how the city is building on the common language of art, education, and innovation.

Details of the Debrecen program series can be found on the festival’s social media page.
