Debrecen Flower Carnival will be a community experience this year

The Night Ride, the Galiba Festival, the parade, the number of stands, and even the target audience are changing.

The aim is for all generations to find the most exciting experiences for them – from younger to older people. To this end, a community flower float decorating event is open to the public from 15 to 19 August. This year, a new tradition is to be revived, whereby a flower float will be dressed up by the people of Debrecen.

“New locations, new experiences, even more community magic in Debrecen between August 15th and 20th,“ this is how the press office of the Főnix Event Organiser summarised this year’s carnival programmes.

Anyone can join the community flower float decoration at Dósa nádor Square, where anyone can work together to create Debrecen’s community flower float.

One of the biggest novelties of the carnival week will be the expanded, new programme of the Galiba Children’s Festival. In addition to the amusement park experiences, the courtyard of the Old Town Hall as a new location will also be filled with children’s noise. Puppet theatre performances, a dance hall, fun children’s programmes, and daily craft activities await the new generation of carnival goers.

The Galiba Children’s Carnival promises to be an outstanding attraction, as the organisers put it,” The little ones will also get a downtown parade. This year, children will parade in the city centre with their own flower floats.”

Kindergarteners and primary school children from the city’s educational institutions, as well as the dance groups associated with the Flower Carnival, will set off from Dósa Nádor Square at 5.00 p.m. on August 19 and arrive at the Memorial Garden by 6.30 p.m. The special feature of the parade is that the small flower floats are decorated by the children themselves, so the joy of community creation and the connection to the holiday becomes a real experience. The program will end at 7.00 p.m. with a children’s concert in the Memorial Garden.

The favorite carnival programme of cyclists, the Night Ride, awaits participants at a new starting location, in front of the Great Church. The route will also be renewed: the cycling carnival experience, which is becoming more and more popular every year, will start in front of the Great Church. The participants will make the event even more special with lights, creative costumes, and a sense of belonging.

The “City Dances” programme series will be even more spectacular this year between August 15 and 20. A total of 42 dance groups will perform at seven different locations between 10.00 a.m. and 12.00 p.m. From Hungarian folk dance to contemporary styles to international dances, all genres will be represented. On August 20, the daytime programmes will be followed by the Carnival Fiesta in the evening, which will take place in the northern event square. The event will welcome visitors with music, dance, spectacular lights, and a community atmosphere.

The night flower float parade on August 20 is also being prepared with innovation: compared to last year, an additional stand will be built at the Kölcsey Centre this year so that even more spectators will have the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular procession from a safe, comfortable place.

The Debrecen Flower Carnival is a celebration of community celebration, creation, and experiences every year. In 2025, it will offer even more opportunities for participants to be not only spectators but also active participants in the magic of the carnival.
