Debrecen helps children start school
The budget for the 2024 back-to-school support is HUF 7 million.
Aid applications can be submitted to the Social Welfare Department from July 1st to October 31st.
Applicants can find information about the subsidy on the City’s website or ask for information and the application form at the Social Department’s Customer Service (New City Hall, 11 Kálvin Square, window 6). The form can also be downloaded from the website www.debrecen.hu.
The school start-up allowance is available if the family’s per capita income does not exceed HUF 78,100 in the case of living alone or HUF 103,500 in the case of a single person.
In addition to the back-to-school allowance, the Municipality of Debrecen supports Debrecen families throughout the year by providing meals for kindergarten and schoolchildren. At the start of the 2023/2024 school year, 4,877 children benefited from the subsidy, and based on the applications received so far, 3,856 children will receive complimentary meals at the beginning of the 2024/2025 school year.
The municipality has allocated HUF 1,664,110,831 for this purpose in 2023 based on a state aid application and HUF 1,593,960,328 HUF in the 2024 budget.
In addition, the municipality supports students with an academic average of 4.5 if the net monthly income per person in the family caring for the child does not exceed HUF 83,000. In this case, the student will receive an extra HUF 10,000 per month for ten months.
In 2016, the Municipality of Debrecen established the Béla Békessy Sports Scholarship and the Cívis Talentum Scholarship.
The Béla Békessy Sports Scholarship promotes successful participation in international sports competitions. It can be awarded to support an athlete competing in a sports organisation in Debrecen, participating in an individual or team sport, amateur or professional, adult or the oldest junior age group, who has achieved an outstanding result at the Olympics, Paralympics, World Games, World Championships, World Cup or European Championships.
The Cívis Talentum scholarship aims to contribute to successful participation in international competitions. The scholarship can be awarded to talented secondary school students studying in Debrecen who, in addition to their school studies, have participated in international academic competitions in the fields of humanities, real sciences, foreign languages, arts, IT, or vocational training and who have also shown exemplary, outstanding performance for their fellow students.
In the 2024 budget, a total of HUF 47.6 million is available in the Civil, Youth and Cultural Fund, HUF 4 million for the Cívis Talentum scholarship, HUF 20.6 million for the Béla Békessy sports scholarship, HUF 15 million for the Bursa Hungarica scholarship, HUF 7.4 million for supporting student sports activities, and HUF 4 million for the Public Foundation for Talented Debrecen Youth.
In addition, the Debrecen Charity Board is also helping families in need with donations of school supplies, which are not linked to income limits but are based on where the greatest need is.
