Holocaust victims remembered in Debrecen
The Debrecen Jewish Community held a memorial service on Sunday at the Monostorpályi Road cemetery. Those who do not respect their past have no future, as stated by Tamás Horovitz during the memorial service for the victims of the Holocaust in Debrecen over the weekend.
The president of the Debrecen Jewish Community emphasised at the Sunday event held at the Monostorpályi Road cemetery, “It is important that we pass on the memories of the events that took place 80 years ago to the younger generation.”
At the memorial service, Deputy Mayor István Puskás, representing the Debrecen local government, paid his respects to the victims of the Holocaust. In his speech, he highlighted that not only do we recall personal memories in the cemetery, but that such a visit also helps to pass them on to the new generation.
At the event, it was noted that a considerable amount of time had passed since the cruel event, providing an opportunity to reflect on and evaluate the events of that time.
“We always have a task because we see in the world; unfortunately, as they say, humanity does not learn from history. There are still wars now, and there is a complicated situation in Israel, in the Middle East, and also here in Europe. It is always relevant, and we always have to remember, but I think it is crucial during this period,” the president of the Debrecen Jewish Community, Tamás Horovitz, pointed out.
