Debrecen International Airport’s operator announced on its Facebook page that from the 31st of May, Kartago Tours will operate a charter flight from Debrecen to Heraklion, Crete, once a week, on Saturdays, adding pre-booking discounts are available until the 28th of February.
Crete, the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean is one of the island’s most important sights, the Royal Palace of Knossos, the most significant remnant of the ancient Minoan culture. The island also contains the ruins of several ancient cities, such as Phaistos and Agia Triada. In addition to its historical past, the island has many beautiful beaches, such as Balos, Elafonissi and Falassarna. Crete could also be reached in the past by charter flights and Wizz Air from Debrecen.
This means four new flights will start from Debrecen International Airport in just over a month.
The Hungarian subsidiary of the Czech Smartwings group has added two new destinations from Debrecen to its summer 2025 schedule.
From Debrecen, it will be possible to fly to Barcelona and Tirana from the city’s airport once a week between the beginning of June and the end of September.
According to the plans, the airline’s Boeing 737-800 aircraft will fly to the Spanish city on Thursdays and to the Albanian capital on Mondays.
For a few years, Wizz Air operated a flight to Barcelona from Debrecen, but it has never been possible to fly to Tirana on a scheduled flight from Debrecen.
Israeli Israir announced that it plans to launch the Debrecen-Tel-Aviv flight at the end of April, which was also a popular Wizz Air flight before the 2023 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel.
Mayor László Papp said at the December general meeting that after Wizz Air significantly reduced the number of its flights to Debrecen due to its aircraft capacity problems, the municipality and the majority owner of the airport operator, the Ministry of National Economy, are continuously working on expanding the number of destinations.
The city leader hopes that 3 to 4 new airlines will be able to operate at the airport.
Travellers can fly to Munich with Lufthansa and to London with Wizz Air.
Wizz Air will restart its flights to Larnaca, Cyprus, in early April, but according to its schedule, travellers cannot fly to Burgas, Bulgaria. Still, it will be available by charter flight.
