Debrecen is catching up with the national average in terms of the ratio of jobs to population

n today’s labour market, companies compete for workers, not the other way around. In Debrecen, more than 20,000 new jobs have been announced in the last decade and, contrary to the previous trend, fresh graduates can now find a place in the market. However, Debrecen is still in the process of catching up with the national average in terms of the job-to-population ratio.

There are more jobs available in and around Debrecen than there are workers, according to the Head of a Human Resources management company interviewed by Debrecen Television.

“In addition to salary, communication, a humane work environment, and the ability to work from home are also important considerations for job seekers. Many people withdraw from the hiring process because of one of these issues, even though they apply for a position,” Albert Vitos spoke about this on Monday’s Evening Snapshot.

“Companies are forced to come up with unique solutions, everyone wants to come up with something new to make their product, their company, their job more attractive to the employee. There was an interesting saying I heard a long time ago: The company chooses and the employee decides. This is very true today,” HSA’s Branch Manager Albert Vitos emphasised.

In Debrecen, economic development took a new direction more than a decade ago, and one of the key points was to create as many new jobs as possible. The city has since announced the creation of more than 20,000 new jobs. Speaking on the latest Public Affairs programme, EDC Debrecen’s CEO said that in the past, young people found jobs elsewhere after graduating, but nowadays, those who finish their schooling in Debrecen can find a job in the city.

According to Zoltán Pécskay, there is still room for more jobs, as the county still lags behind the national average in terms of the ratio of jobs to population.

“What is happening now with all these new jobs is that we are making up for lost ground. So what the tendency has been for us to lose young talent because they went to work in regions where there had been good career opportunities for years, we are now making up for this and people who had to leave here can thrive here,” he said.

The EDC ‘s CEO added that there is a significant potential for labour replacement in the city due to education. The Debrecen Vocational Training Centre has 13,000 students, while the University of Debrecen has more than 34,000 students.
