Debrecen‑Made BMW in Huge Demand — Production Ramp‑Up Under Consideration
The iX3 produced at BMW Group Plant Debrecen is already immensely popular in Germany, to the extent that BMW is considering introducing an additional shift earlier than originally planned, as reported by Világgazdaság citing corporate information from Der Spiegel.
Within BMW circles it is rumored that demand for the iX3 is “pleasingly strong” among both private and fleet customers, resulting in a “very high order backlog.” The Munich-based group therefore intends to ramp up production in Debrecen and may introduce an extra shift earlier than initially planned.
According to Der Spiegel’s article, this is due to the unusually high proportion of private customers who have never driven a BMW before. The newspaper reports that in Germany, every third buyer is a new customer.
Based on the monthly report of HR Portal and the company information service Opten, more than three thousand people are already working at the plant, while recruitment is continuing. According to BMW’s careers website, applications are currently being accepted for 51 positions. Among others, the company is looking for team leaders and specialists for several production units, maintenance technicians, car mechanics, as well as a tax expert.
As announced recently, the BMW Group delivered 2,463,715 vehicles worldwide in 2025—a 0.5 percent increase compared to 2024. BMW sold 442,072 fully electric vehicles, with a 3.6 percent increase.
Series production of the iX3—introduced in September as the first member of the Neue Klasse model family—began a few months ago at the Debrecen plant. According to BMW, there is huge interest in the cars. The first deliveries of the iX3 model are expected in the spring for Europe and summer for America. In Germany, more orders have already been placed for the electric iX3 than for the gasoline-powered X3 model.
BMW Group Plant Debrecen was a topic on last week’s Közlekedésinfó, where Minister of Construction and Transport János Lázár said that the iX3 vehicles produced there are already all sold, with forecasts for the cars under production extending several months ahead. He also predicted that one million cars will be produced in Eastern Hungary’s automotive plants in the next few years, and the products of these factories will be transported by rail. Therefore, “strengthening the Miskolc–Budapest, Nyíregyháza–Budapest, Debrecen–Budapest, and Szeged–Budapest railway corridors and ensuring the Danube crossing are indispensable, and the loan received from the European Investment Bank will significantly serve this purpose as well.”
Recently, a truly spectacular video was also released by the BMW Group, which follows the production process of the iX3 from the pressing of the first sheets of metal all the way to the moment the vehicle rolls off the production line.
