Debrecen Marathon to Return Next Year
The Debrecen Marathon is a community celebration where professional athletes and enthusiastic amateurs alike can experience the power and joy of running, organised for the first time in 2026 by the University of Debrecen through extensive cooperation between the city, institutions and sports professionals. On that occasion, 2,600 participants ran along a route taking in some of the city’s most iconic landmarks.
The aim for next year is to surpass that number of entrants. “It is important for the University of Debrecen to maintain a visible presence in the public consciousness in the field of sport as well. In this spirit, Campus Sports Festival was also organised as a prelude to Campus Festival, where more than 1,000 students competed in three sports. Let us not forget that last year’s Debrecen Marathon followed a route that passed through the Great Forest, the university campuses and the city’s most emblematic locations. Next year’s marathon will be held on 4 April. We hope to welcome between 3,000 and 4,000 participants in 2027,” said Zoltán Bács, Rector of the University of Debrecen at a press conference held on Wednesday at Campus Festival.
He added that the organisers do not wish to create merely a race next year either. In addition to providing an opportunity for people to take part in sport, they aim to promote a health-conscious lifestyle and offer a community experience that brings people closer together through sport. In 2027, organisers will once again welcome running enthusiasts across five distances and nine categories.
