Debrecen professor appointed head of European professional organization

For the next three years, Ildikó Horváth, a university professor at the University of Debrecen and director of the Pulmonology Clinic, will be the Secretary General of the European Pulmonology Society (ERS), unideb.hu reported on Tuesday.

The new leader was elected last year and was inaugurated at the organization’s most recent conference. Ildikó Horváth is the first Hungarian specialist to hold the position of Secretary General.

The world’s largest pulmonary medical professional meeting, the European Pulmonology Society (ERS) Congress, was held in Amsterdam at the end of September, with more than 22,000 specialists from 160 countries participating in the five-day event.

The new leaders of the ERS were inaugurated at the general meeting held at the professional event, including the new Secretary General, Ildikó Horváth, a professor at the University of Debrecen and director of the Pulmonology Clinic.

“With my inauguration, a Hungarian specialist has been appointed to this position for the first time since the existence of the society, but this is also the second time in Central and Eastern Europe. The inauguration is not ceremonial but rather an announcement and information for the members that I will be performing the duties of Secretary General between 2025 and 2028. The election took place last year; so far I have participated in the board meetings as an observer, which was very good preparation for this complex work,” Ildikó Horváth told hirek.unideb.hu.

Ildikó Horváth hopes that the specialists of the University of Debrecen can also benefit from her election as secretary general. She hopes that her young colleagues will be more closely involved in the professional working groups of the society, in the formulation of plans, and in the various ERS educational events, which will accelerate the integration of the most up-to-date professional knowledge into the healing work.

As Secretary General of the European Society of Pulmonology, her first task will be to reform and update the statutes of the society and to plan the professional work planned with the member societies for the coming years. In addition, she and her colleagues are evaluating the joint work carried out so far with the American Society of Pulmonology and have begun to develop the basic pillars of the educational and research cooperation with the Chinese Society of Pulmonology.
