Debrecen schoolchildren participated in a career orientation day at the Old Town Hall

What does the mayor’s day look like? What does it feel like to lead such a big city? Among other things, the fourth-grade students of Dózsa György Elementary School received answers to these questions.

Questions rained down in the Simonffy Hall of the Old Town Hall. The fourth-grade students of Dózsa György Elementary School sat in the council room, where they could ask Mayor László Papp.

Many were curious about what it feels like to lead such a big city and how he became a mayor. There were also some children who would like to be mayor. The school’s students visited the Old Town Hall as part of a career orientation day, where Mayor László Papp led them around and told them about the city’s history.

The fourth-graders prepared a surprise for the city manager, as they are currently learning the structure of settlements, so everyone could present their own project work.

“On the one hand, we were given career orientation, and on the other hand, we could hear in practice about how the structure of such a large settlement of 200,000 people works, how it is maintained, and how their everyday lives are spent,” emphasized Erika Pallosné Bodnár, director of the Dózsa György Primary School.

The children also spoke to the city manager in a foreign language, because thanks to bilingual education, they can master German at a high level and will soon become familiar with English. László Papp told the children that with the English-German pairing, they will be able to get by anywhere in the world.

“It was a very interactive meeting; I could hardly answer the questions. The children were very interested; they asked very relevant, smart, prepared questions. Such that even I sometimes had to struggle to give the right answers. So it was a great experience,” summed up the mayor.

The 16 classes of the Dózsa György Elementary School got to know the various activities at 16 locations today.
