Debrecen screens the Queen of Art Deco
In connection with the current exhibition at the Méliusz Library, the Polish Institute and Apollo Cinema in Debrecen invite art lovers to a special cultural treat. The exclusive, free film screening will introduce the story of Tamara de Lempicka, one of the most exciting and influential painters of the 20th century.
The film featured in the program is Tamara de Lempicka’s true story, the American documentary “The Art of Survival,” made in 2024.
The film explores Lempicka’s distinctive portraits of the social elite, her sensual and powerful nudes, and the luxurious, independent lifestyle inseparable from her art. Directed by Julie Rubio and written by Amy Harrison, the 96‑minute documentary traces her dramatic journey from early rise to stardom, through historical upheavals, and her later reinvention in the U.S. art market.
Authenticity is ensured by contributions not only from art historians but also from family members, including Victoria and Marisa de Lempicka, alongside experts such as Paula Birnbaum and Cristina de Lempicka.
The screening of the film will begin at 8.00 p.m. on December 12 and is shown in its original language with Hungarian subtitles, allowing the audience to enjoy the work in its authentic form.
As the event is part of the library exhibition’s accompanying program, admission is free, but due to limited seating, advance registration is required. Those interested can secure their seats in person at the Apollo Cinema box office or online.
